CSUN Takes Opener in Extras, UCLA Wins Nightcap
5/15/2018 11:12:00 PM | Baseball
CSUN Baseball (25-27) earned a split with No. 17 UCLA on Tuesday evening at Jackie Robinson Stadium. Resuming a suspended game from March 14, the Matadors came-from-behind to win a 13-inning marathon, 4-3, as Albee Weiss hit a walk-off solo home run. The Bruins bounced back with a 15-2 win over the Matadors in the nightcap to even the season series.
Â
Weiss, who also homered back on March 14 against UCLA, stretched his season home run total to 18 and career tally to 40. The senior slugger is the first Matador in 21 seasons to rack up at least 18 homers in a single season.
Â
Game One Recap:
Â
After 62 days, the Matadors were able to resume their game with UCLA, this time inside Jackie Robinson Stadium. The Bruins led 3-2 in the bottom of the eighth against CSUN when rain ended the teams' contest back on March 14.
Â
The game picked up right where it left off with two Matadors on base and nobody out. Trevor Casanova stepped to the plate and laced a single to right field to load the bases. Albee Weiss followed with an RBI groundout to the left side, evening the game at 3-3. The Bruins' Kyle Mora entered out of the bullpen and retired the next two batters to end the frame.
Â
In the ninth, Jayson Newman picked off Ryan Kriedler at first base and struck out Jake Preis in a scoreless frame. After the Matadors went in order in the ninth, the game went into extras.
Â
UCLA loaded the bases in the 10th and 11th innings, both with one out, but the Matador 'pen held strong to keep the game tied. In the 10th, Newman struck out Jarron Silva before Tei Vanderford finished off the frame with a strike out of Jeremy Ydens. An inning later, Vanderford worked himself into a bases load jam until he fanned Kyle Cuellar and retired Michael Toglia on a groundout.
Â
Vanderford found his groove on the mound, retiring eight-straight batters to give the Matadors a chance to break through.
Â
After the eighth, CSUN managed just one base runner until the 13th inning where Weiss would deliver the game's deciding hit. Mora struck out the first two batters in the frame but Weiss stepped to the plate next and launched a rocket deep over the left field wall to give CSUN its fourth walk-off hit of the season.
Â
Vanderford earned the victory as he tossed 3.1 shutout innings allowing a hit.
Â
Game Two Recap:
Â
The Matadors led off the first and second innings with hits but came up empty in each frame. The Bruins would take advantage by plating two runs in the bottom of the second. After Toglia and Daniel Amaral reached on singles, Kreider roped a two-run single just out of the outstretched reach of a diving Alvaro Rubalcaba.
Â
CSUN answered back in the third inning behind a two-out hit of its own. Casanova worked a two-out walk before Weiss stroked a single to center field. Kevin Riley followed with an RBI hit, plating a hustling Casanova to cut the deficit in half.
Â
UCLA would break the game open over the middle frames, scoring 12 runs over the fourth, fifth and sixth innings. In the fourth, Kreidler drove in two more runs with a single with the bases loaded. Ydens capped off a four-run fourth with a two-out two-run single that stretched the lead to 6-1. UCLA scored two more in the fifth behind an RBI double from Jack Stronach and fielder's choice from Kreidler.
Â
The Matadors plated a run in the top of the sixth on an RBI groundout from Nolan Bumstead but the Bruins batted around in the home-half of the sixth and scored six more times to extend to a 12-run lead. Chase Strumpf roped a two-run home run inside the left foul pole in the sixth while Pries, Daniel Rosica and Ydens also drove in runs.Â
Casanova's 21-game hit streak was snapped in the loss, however he extended his on-base streak to 22 consecutive games with a walk. Justin Toerner and Weiss each finished with two hits in the contestÂ
The Matadors open up their final Big West Conference series this weekend at Cal State Fullerton. The opener of the series is set for Thursday evening at 6 p.m. on ESPN3.Â
