The Titans (14-4) are 3.5 games ahead of second-place CSUN for the top spot in the Big West. UC Irvine is in third place with a 10-8 record followed by Hawai'i (9-9), Cal Poly (9-9), Long Beach State (9-9), UC Santa Barbara (8-10), UC Davis (7-14) and UC Riverside (6-12). The Matadors along with UC Irvine, Hawai'i, Cal Poly and Long Beach State and UCSB are all still alive for a Big West title with two weekends left in the regular season.
In order for CSUN to win a Big West title, the Matadors must sweep Cal State Fullerton this weekend, the Titans would need to lose at least two games to Long Beach State next weekend, and both UC Irvine and Long Beach State must finish with 10 conference losses. Since winning the conference title in 2002, the Matadors have not entered the final weekend of their Big West schedule still alive for the conference crown.Â
CSUNÂ is coming off nearly 15 innings of play at UCLA on Tuesday evening. Before their regularly scheduled game, the teams finished off their game that was suspended on March 14 due to rain. CSUN entered play on Tuesday trailing 3-2 but managed to squeeze across the tying run on an RBI groundout from Albee Weiss. The game would go into extra innings, and after escaping bases loaded jams in the 10th and 11th innings, the Matadors would score the winning run in the 13th. With two outs, Weiss smacked a home run to left field for a walk-off victory. Tei Vanderford earned the win by tossing 3.1 shutout innings of work in relief.Â
Following the dramatic CSUN victory, UCLA bounced back with a 15-2 win in the nightcap to even the season series.Â
Going into the books with two home runs in the opener, Weiss collected his seventh career multiple-home run game of his career. Weiss improved his season home run total to 18, which are the most by a Matador in 21 seasons.Â
Entering his final Big West series, Trevor Casanova leads the conference with a .370 batting average and 18 doubles while he is second in runs (38), hits (74) and on-base percentage (.431). Fifth in the nation in home runs, Weiss is tops in the league in homers, RBI (56) and slugging percentage (.593).Â
Coming off a pair of quality starts, junior right hander Walker Armstrong will start Friday against the Titans followed by junior left hander Isaiah Nunez and junior right hander Matt Acosta. Armstrong (3-4) is sporting a 3.70 ERA, two complete games and 58 strikeouts in a team-high 80.1 innings. Nunez (1-1) has made 21 appearances this season and registered 3.74 ERA and 40 strikeouts. Acosta (5-5) is tied for the team lead in wins with five to go with a 3.98 ERA and 40 strikeouts in 63.1 innings.Â
The Titans leads the all-time series with the Matadors 73-50. CSUN seeks its first series win against the Titans since the 2002 campaign. Over the last 15 seasons, Cal State Fullerton has won 42 of 49 games in the series. Last season, the Matadors knocked off the Titans in their regular season finale 8-4. Justin Toerner is hitting .361 (13-for-36) with a home run and six RBI in his career against the Titans while Weiss is batting .333 (10-for-30) with a homer and six RBI of his own.Â
