Matadors Drop Finale at Cal State Fullerton
5/20/2018 5:11:00 PM | Baseball
The Matadors jumped in front in the first inning as Toerner doubled to begin the game and Casanova delivered with an RBI single to left field. The Titans though would answer in the bottom of the first with a series of two-out hits. Daniel Cope evened the game with an RBI hit up the middle. Sahid Valenzuela and Jake Pavletich followed with RBI hits of their own to put the Titans ahead 3-1.Â
CSUN loaded the bases in the top of the third after Albee Weiss singled and Riley Conlan walked with two outs but Andrew Quezada retired Riley Conlan. The Matadors also left the bases loaded in the fourth and seventh innings on Sunday.Â
Matt Acosta kept the Titans off the scoreboard in the second and third innings, however the Titans added to their lead in the fourth. Acosta retired two of the first three batters before Bret Borgogno stroked an RBI double down the left field line. LoForte extended the lead to 5-1 on a single to left, plating Borgogno.Â
The Matadors cut the Titan lead in half in the sixth. Alex Hull began the frame with a walk and Alvaro Rubalcaba followed with a single through the left side. Two batters later, Toerner went the other way with a single to left to bring home Hull. Casanova then brought the Matadors to within 5-3 on a sacrifice fly.
With its lead trimmed to two, Cal State Fullerton would break the game wide open moments later in the bottom of the sixth. The first five Titan batters reached on base hits to start the frame, capped off by a three-run double from Mitchell Berryhill. Cope added to the lead with a one-out single through the right side that pushed the lead to 10-3.Â
CSUNÂ got a run back in the seventh on a RBI double from Joey Cooper. The Matadors looked for more as Alex Hull walked and Brandon Bohning singled to load the bases. The Titans' Blake Workman though escaped trouble by retiring Toerner to end the inning.Â
Fullerton added another insurance run in the seventh via a wild pitch with two outs. The Titan bullpen would seal the win with scoreless eighth and ninth innings.Â
Despite the series loss, the Matadors finished Big West play with their first winning record since the 2013 season. CSUNÂ also posted its most series wins (5) and road series wins (3) in 16 years.Â
Casanova notched his 76th hit of the season, which are the most by a Matador since C.J. Belanger recorded 76 hits during the 2010 season.Â
The Matadors will conclude the 2018 season next weekend against USC in non-conference action. The opener is set for Thursday at 6 p.m. while the rest of the series will continue on Saturday at 6 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m.Â
