Weiss' Home Run Lifts CSUN to Series Victory Over UCSB
5/6/2018 5:10:00 PM | Baseball
CSUNÂ has now won three Big West series on the road for the first time since 2002. Also, the team's four conference series wins this season are the most for the program in five years.Â
Â
The Matadors threatened in each frame in extra innings but were turned away in the 10th and 11th. UCSB's Chris Troye tiptoed out of danger in the 10th when he retired Trevor Casanova and Weiss, stranding runners on first and second base. Troye stopped the Matadors' rally an inning later as well by forcing Rubalcaba to fly out, leaving two more runners on base.
Â
Weiss, who flied out to end the 10th, would come away with the clutch hit in the 12th to give the Matadors the lead for good.
Â
Brandon Bohning reached to start the 12th on a hit by pitch. After Justin Toerner executed a sacrifice bunt, Casanova was intentionally walked bringing the Matadors' clean-up hitter to the plate. Early in the at bat, Weiss hit a rocket into left field that sailed out of the ballpark but foul. Just two pitches later, Weiss belted the ball well over the left field fence, this time in fair territory, to give CSUN a 6-3 edge.Â
Hayden Shenfield worked 1.2 shutout innings including a 1-2-3 bottom of the 12th to post his second win of the season.Â
Earlier in the game, CSUN starter Matt Acosta kept the Gauchos off the scoreboard through the first two innings, but UCSB surged in front in the bottom of the third. Andrew Martinez kept the inning alive with a two-out hit before Clay Fisher stroked a two-run home run to left field.
Â
The Matadors would waste little time responding, however, as CSUN battled back to take a 3-2 lead in the fourth. Casanova and Weiss led off the frame with back-to-back singles. After Kevin Riley reached on a Jason Willow error at third, both runners moved up a base. Nolan Bumstead drove in CSUN's first run on a sacrifice fly to right field before Riley Conlan rifled a double to left center, plating the tying and go-ahead runs.
Â
Acosta protected the lead in the fourth but a leadoff double from Armani Smith signaled the end of the day for the right hander. Jayson Newman entered the fray and struck out the next two batters before Tommy Jew collected an RBI single to plate the tying run.Â
Newman would not allow any more runs across in the fifth and he retired two of the first three in the sixth before being lifted in favor of Vanderford. The Matador senior was superb throughout the day as he set down 13 consecutive batters to help keep the game tied. Vanderford struck out five batters in the contest and his only hit allowed would come in the bottom of the 11th.
Fisher picked up the one hit against Vanderford with one out in the frame. After a balk moved Fisher to second base in the inning, he stole third base. Vanderford was able to get two strikes on Jew before head coach Greg Moore signaled for Shenefield to enter the game. On the very next pitch, Shenefield struck out Jew before he intentionally walked Thomas Rowan to put runners at the corners. Shenefield would then get out of trouble by retiring Eric Yang on a flyout to center setting up Weiss' heorics in the 12th.Â
Earning a no decision, Acosta worked 4.0 innings, scattering eight hits. Newman tossed 1.2 shutout innings while Shenefield allowed a walk and no hits in his 1.2 innings of work.Â
Weiss' home run was his 38th of his career, putting him in sole possession of fourth place all time in CSUN history. He is also in eighth place on the Matadors' career RBI list. Casanova, who finished 1-for-5 with two runs, extended his hitting streak to 17-straight games.Â
The Matadors return home on Tuesday to start their final homestand of the season. CSUN will take on Fresno State to open the four-game homestand at 3 p.m. The game will air on the CSUN Sports Network presented by Dignity Health with Ross Porter on the call at 2:45 p.m.Â
