NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - For the third time in five matches this season, the CSUN Matadors went the distance but on Saturday the visiting Idaho Vandals used some timely serving to pull out a a 24-26, 25-20, 21-25, 25-19, 15-10 victory at the CSUN/Pepperdine Challenge in The Matadome.
CSUNÂ (2-3) dropped its first match of its own co-hosted tournament but will look to rebound Sunday against the Waves in Malibu. The Matadors are now 4-1 all-time in the two-year old tournament.
CSUNÂ had a chance at the match despite being out-hit .250-.147 and being out-blocked 12.0-5.0. The Matadors helped themselves by matching their season-high with 10 aces while defensively setting a season-high with 77 digs.
"As I look at the stats, I'm a little amazed that the match was as close as it was," said CSUN Head Coach Jeff Stork. "That also tells me that we're doing some good stuff in other areas which kept us in the match.
"There's some basic stuff that we need to continue to do to get better, but that also comes with experience," added Stork. "It's disappointing that we lost the match but when you have that high an error percentage it's difficult to win."
Aeryn Owens put down a match-high 15 kills to go with a team-high 18 digs for her second double-double this season and 20th of her career. After hitting .389 in CSUN's 3-0 sweep over North Texas on Friday, the senior outside hitter had somewhat of an off-night, hitting .094 on 53 attacks against the Vandals.
Freshman Lexi McLeod added 12 kills, hitting .095 on 42 swings and narrowly missed her third double-double of the season by scooping up nine digs. The Matador middles were effective as junior Morgan Salone hit .500 with 10 kills and Brianna Johnson chipped in six kills on .714 hitting in her CSUN debut.
Junior setter Kamalu Makekau-Whittaker registered her first career double-double with career-highs of 27 assists and 15 digs while Hannah Merjil also notched her second of the season with 21 assists and 11 digs. Senior Kristey Markle and freshman Nicole Nevarez combined to serve six of CSUN's 10 aces as each had three.
The Matadors did not hit higher than .171 in any of the first four sets before connecting at a .368 clip in the final set. But CSUNÂ was done in by the Idaho service game as a kill and three consecutive Vandal aces erased a 5-3 Matador lead in the final frame.
Trailing 7-5, a Nevarez kill pulled CSUN within one but an ensuing Matador service error and another Idaho ace boosted the lead to 9-6. CSUN stayed within two at 9-7, 10-8 and again at 11-9 before the Vandals closed the match on a 4-1 run to seal the victory.Â
Reece Carmen had 14 kills to lead Idaho (3-2) while DeVonne Ryter and Kaela Strong each added 10 kills in the win.Â
