Matadors Drop CSUN/Pepperdine Challenge Finale
9/2/2018 4:29:00 PM | Women's Volleyball
MALIBU, Calif. - Senior Aeryn Owens had a match-high 16 kills but the CSUN Women's Volleyball team dropped the finale of the CSUN/Pepperdine Challenge to the co-host Waves 3-1 Sunday afternoon at Firestone Fieldhouse.
Set scores were 25-14, 25-17, 19-25, 25-10 as Pepperdine improves to 4-2. The Matadors, who won the inaugural CSUN/Pepperdine Challenge in 2017 with a perfect 3-0 record, finish the tournament 1-2 and slip to 2-4 on the season.
Owens, an All-Tournament selection along with junior Morgan Salone, bounced back after a tough hitting night against Idaho on Saturday. The senior outside hitter hit .312 on 32 attacks to go with four digs, three assists and one block. Salone added seven kills on .375 hitting and notched a pair of blocks.
No other CSUNÂ hitter had more than six kills as the Matadors wound up hitting .196 (42-21-107) as a team. CSUN had trouble stopping the Pepperdine attack as the hosts connected at a .429 clip (58-10-112).
The Matadors were out-hit .452 to .088 in dropping the opening set 25-14. But CSUN rebounded to hit .318 in set two, unfortunately Pepperdine hit .500 to take a two-set lead following the 25-17 win.
Needing a win in set three to stay in the match, CSUN led by four at 10-6 in the early going. A 3-1 run by Pepperdine trimmed the lead to 11-9 before three straight Matador points, the last coming on a Daniella Molinari block, pushed the lead to 14-9. The CSUN lead was never less than three points the rest of the set as the Matadors forced a fourth set.
In the fourth, CSUN then had its worst hitting set of the match (-.042) as the Waves took the set handily 25-10 and the match 3-1.
Shannon Scully was one of four Pepperdine hitters with double figures in kills, putting down a team-high 15.
CSUNÂ heads back out on the road next weekend as the Matadors take on No. 4 Florida, Southern Illinois and Northern Arizona at the Lumberjack Classic in Flagstaff, Ariz,
