CSUN Hands No. 17 Cornell A 3-1 Defeat
9/14/2018 9:59:00 PM | Men's Soccer
NORTHRIDGE, Calif.—Michael Flores scored a goal and added an assist as CSUN handed No. 17 Cornell a 3-1 defeat in men's soccer action Friday night at Matador Field.
Â
After a scoreless first half, Matadors' freshman Wolfgang Prentice broke the seal 3:56 into the closing frame when he put back a Jordan Kinoshi attempt for his third goal of the season. Flores would record what proved to be the game winner in the 65th minute. Johnny Rodriguez sent a through ball toward the right side of Big Red keeper Ryan Shellow for Flores. Flores' blast went off Shellow's back and into the goal to put CSUN up by two.
Â
Cornell struck at 74:24 when Harry Fuller capped off a run with his first goal of the year with a strike from eight yards out. Daniel Trejo responded with his fourth goal of the year 34 seconds later. Off a CSUN attack, Flores sent a pass to Trejo. Trejo sprinted ahead of the Big Red defense and took a shot from the low left of the Cornell net and would go in through the low right of the Big Red goal.Â
Â
"Cornell is a very disciplined team with a distinct pattern as they go to goal," said CSUN head coach Terry Davila. "It was a matter of us recuperating the ball and getting more attacks on them. I thought we got a little out-physicaled in the first half and won more 50-50 balls which hurt our offense. In the second half, we wanted our defense to spark our offense. That gave us a little more energy and that is what sparked us in the second half."
Â
Cornell (3-2) outshot CSUN 18-15, but only three of the attempts were on goal. In comparison, 11 of the 15 Matadors' shots were on goal. Shellow made eight saves while Henrik Regitnig tallied two saves. Â
Â
CSUN (5-2) takes on its third nationally ranked opponent in four matches Sunday when the Matadors travel to No. 11/13 UCLA (4-1). Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
