NORTHRIDGE, Calif.—The University of San Diego edged No. 13 CSUN 1-0 in men's soccer action Sunday night at Matador Field.
Â
The Toreros (4-4-2) scored the game winning goal with 7:16 remaining in the second half when Miguel Berry converted a long crossing pass from Reuben Dass for his second goal of the year. The Matadors outshot USD 17-6, 9-2 on goal. CSUN had several chances to score including a Nicolas Grinde attempt that went off the Toreros' post in the 78th minute.
Â
The Matadors nearly tied the match in the 88th. CSUN sent Samuel Dadzie, normally a defender up front on the attack. Dadzie headed the ball towards the USD net. A pair of San Diego players earned a team save. The ball went back out front where Alex Lara headed the ball, but it was saved by Toreros' goalie Matt Wiher. Wiher made eight saves including six on shots taken by CSUN's Daniel Trejo. Trejo's seventh attempt of the match went off the cross bar.
Â
"We didn't take our chances," said CSUN head coach Terry Davila. "Those who don't, watch the other team score."
Â
The Matadors conclude the non-conference portion of the schedule with a 6-4 record. CSUN is off until Wednesday, Oct. 3 when the Matadors travel to Cal State Fullerton (2-2-5) to open Big West play. Kick is set for 7 p.m.
