9/28/2018 9:13:00 PM | Women's Volleyball
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. - The CSUN Women's Volleyball team came up empty in a Big West Conference match Friday night as 15th-ranked Cal Poly handed the Matadors a 3-0 loss at Mott Athletics Center.
The 25-17, 25-16, 25-17 loss drops CSUN to 5-10 overall and 1-2 in the Big West. The Mustangs have now won 13 straight to run their record to 14-1 overall and 4-0 in conference play.
KEY STATISTICS
• Junior Morgan Salone led the Matadors with eight kills, hitting an impressive .727 on 11 errorless attacks. The junior from Eastvale also added a pair of blocks, including one solo stuff.
• Freshman Nicole Nevarez added five kills but CSUN's leading hitter Aeryn Owens was limited to four kills, hitting -.025 on 25 swings.
• Senior setter Erin Indermill had a nice all-around match with nine assists, eight digs and one kill. Indermill also served two of the Matadors' five aces.
• As a team, the Matadors hit .062 (27-20-113) in the loss while Cal Poly connected at a .278 clip (39-12-97).Â
• The Mustangs' Torrey Van Winden led all hitters in the match with 18 kills, hitting .457 on 35 attacks.
COACH JEFF STORKÂ SAID
"It certainly wasn't our best performance of the year, I thought we started off a little shaky. The match was a little patchy for us; and what I mean by that is we'd play well for 5-6 points then we wouldn't play well for 5-6 points. We did some decent things but not consistently enough to really threaten them. As a team we just need to be tougher and mentally prepared to make adjustments."Â
SET 1
Despite the shaky start, the Matadors led 9-5 after Hannah Merjil served her 12th ace of the season. After the hosts pulled within 9-8, Nada Dragovic added an ace of her own keeping CSUN in front 11-9. The Mustangs then put together a 7-0 run to take the lead for good 16-11.Â
SET 2
The Mustangs claimed five of the first six points of the set before the Matadors battled back to get within one at 5-4. But Cal Poly won 10 of the next 12 points to open up a 15-6 cushion and CSUNÂ could not get closer than six points the rest of the way.
SET 3
The Matadors trailed 6-1 early on before a Nevarez kill sparked a 5-2 CSUN run that trimmed the Mustang lead to 8-6. The Matadors were within two (11-9) following a Lexi McLeod kill but the hosts all but sealed the match with an ensuing 8-1 run. Salone's kill pulled CSUN within 22-17 in the final stages but Cal Poly capped the match with three straight points to seal the 25-17 win.
UP NEXT
CSUNÂ completes its current two-match road trip next Tuesday (Oct. 2), traveling to UC Santa Barbara for a 7 p.m. first serve. The Matadors return home Oct. 5 to host UC Davis which begins a two-match CSUNÂ homestand.
