Matadors Snap Skid with 3-1 Win Over Southern Illinois
9/7/2018 7:29:00 PM | Women's Volleyball
FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. - Behind a match-high 23 kills from senior Aeryn Owens, the CSUNÂ Matadors snapped a mini three-match skid Friday with a 3-1 victory over Southern Illinois at the Lumberjack Invitational.
The Matadors (3-5), who dropped a 3-0 decision to No. 8 Florida earlier in the day, bounced back to post their first four-set win of the season over the Salukis.
Owens' kill total was one away from her season high as the senior outside hitter hit .312 on 48 attacks. Redshirt junior Brianna Johnson and freshman Lexi McLeod each chipped in 10 kills as Johnson committed just a single hitting error on 19 swings to hit .474. Fellow middle Morgan Salone added nine kills (.368), five blocks and three digs.
Junior setter Kamalu Makekau-Whittaker posted 23 assists and six digs while redshirt freshman Hannah Merjil recorded her third double-double of the season with 18 kills and a match-high 14 digs. Senior Kristey Markle notched her first career double-double with 13 digs and a career-high 12 assists from the libero spot.
After hitting .025 against the eighth-ranked Gators Friday morning, the Matadors connected at .223 clip (58-27-139), their highest since hitting .287 against North Texas last week.
"We played well 80% of the time tonight," said CSUN Head Coach Jeff Stork. "Aeryn was great and our middles were great but we continue to struggle on the right side. I thought we grinded them down a little bit tonight but we're we're still not getting the type production we need from our servers, we need to figure out how to serve in and hit in."
CSUNÂ trailed 13-7 in the opening set before putting together a 10-1 run to erase the SIU lead and force a Saluki timeout at 17-14. Consecutive kills from Owens gave the Matadors a 22-18 lead and Johnson connected again setting CSUNÂ up with three set points at 24-21.
The Salukis saved a pair of set points before Owens struck for her fifth kill of the set giving the Matadors the 25-21 win. SIU pulled even in the match, taking set two by the score of 25-20.
A Salone kill in set three opened up a 19-15 CSUN lead but the Matadors were then outscored 4-2 out of a Saluki timeout. Kills from McLeod and Nada Dragovic kept CSUN in front 23-21 and an SIU hitting error capped a set-clinching 3-0 run for the Matadors.
Looking the pick up its first four-set win of the season, CSUNÂ jumped out to a 9-2 lead in the fourth set and eventually led by as many nine (16-7) forcing an SIU timeout. The Salukis put together a late charge to pull within 21-19 forcing a late Matador timeout. But kills by four different CSUNÂ hitters down the stretch sealed the victory.
Maggie Nedoma led Southern Illinois (3-6) with 16 kills (.273) while Alysa Sutton added 12 kills (.240).Â
CSUN concludes the Lumberjack Invitational Saturday as the Matadors take on host Northern Arizona. First serve at Rolle Activity Center is scheduled for noon.
