Matadors Come Back to Knock Off Northern Arizona in Five
9/8/2018 2:49:00 PM | Women's Volleyball
FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. - Behind a memorable fifth-set comeback, the CSUN Matadors knocked off Northern Arizona 3-2 Saturday afternoon in the final match of the Lumberjack Classic at Rolle Activity Center.
The Matadors (4-5) dropped the first seven points of the final frame before engineering a 7-1 run to pull within 8-7 following a Nicole Nevarez kill. A 3-1 run by the Lumberjacks pushed the lead back to three at 11-8 before Nevarez struck for a kill then served consecutive aces tying the score at 11-11.
CSUN could not wrestle the lead from NAU until consecutive kills from Aeryn Owens and Lexi McLeod put the Matadors on top 13-12. But an Owens hitting error followed by a kill from NAU's Ryann Davis set the Lumberjacks up with match point at 14-13. Owens answered with a kill, saving one match point and an NAU hitting error followed by a Morgan Salone solo block on match point sent CSUN to the 16-14 victory.
"I think it was our best match this year," said CSUN Head Coach Jeff Stork. "Maybe a little more on the production side and the emotional side but we stayed together and kept our focus.Â
"It was a gritty win against a quality team like NAU," added Stork. "I think in volleyball you can win and lose in a lot of different ways but it was nice to grind this one out."
Owens led all hitters in the match with 21 kills, hitting .204 on 54 attacks. She completed her third double-double of the season by adding 14 digs and was named to the All-Tournament Team for the third time in three tournaments this season.
Nevarez added 12 kills (.250) and eight digs while matching her season-high with three aces. Salone, also an All-Tournament selection, chipped in 11 kills (.286), five blocks and four digs. Three other Matadors also posted double-doubles as freshman McLeod had 10 kills and 12 digs while setters Hannah Merjil (31 assists-11 digs) and senior Erin Indermill (28 assists-12 digs) combined for 59 assists.
The Matadors had 70 kills and hit .184 as a team, slightly better than the hosts who hit .181. NAU hit .288 in upsetting No. 8 Florida in five sets on Friday night.
CSUN also scooped up a season-high 93 digs, led by Kristey Markle's match-high 20.
The Matadors conclude the non-conference portion of the 2018 schedule next weekend, traveling to Boise, Idaho for the Boise State Classic (Sept. 14-15).
