HOW IT HAPPENEDÂ
- The teams played to a 11-11 tie heading into the first quarter media timeout. Baskets from De'Jionae Calloway and Lauren Shymkewicz in the final 2:04 of the period would allow CSUN to lead 15-12 after 10 minutes.
- With Channon Fluker sitting out the entire second quarter due to foul trouble, Calloway picked up the slack in the post. Calloway scored nine of her 11 first half points in the second period. The Matadors would limit the Anteaters to 5-of-17 shooting in the second. CSUN would hold UCI to six points in the final 3:12 of the first half to lead by as many as seven. The Matadors would take a 33-29 advantage into halftime.
- The teams traded baskets to begin the third quarter. Behind five Juliana Louis points, CSUN mounted a 13-2 charge that earned the Matadors its largest lead of the game, 46-33 as the third quarter media timeout came on the floor.
- CSUN would lead by as many as 14 during the third quarter, however, UC Irvine held the Matadors without a point over the final 3:16 to cut the lead to 50-45 as the fourth began.
- CSUN got off to an 8-4 start in the fourth quarter, resulting in an Anteaters' turnover at the 5:37 mark. Trailing 58-49, Lauren Saiki's three-pointer cut into the Matadors' advantage. CSUN would post two consecutive turnovers which would result in a 58-55 score on a Haleigh Talbert three-pointer. The Matadors again turned the ball over, leading to a Brooke Bayman field goal and a 58-57 game.
- The Anteaters took the lead when Saiki sank a three-pointer at the 1:44 mark. A CSUN miss resulted in a Jordan Sanders' basket. Down 62-58, Jordyn Jackson made a three-pointer with 40 seconds remaining. On the ensuing possession, UCI ran the shot clock down to one second before Bayman's three-pointer put the game away for the Anteaters.Â
- Calloway led the Matadors with 15 points. She went 7-of-12 from the field.
- Jackson and Fluker both scored 11 points. Louis tied her season high with 13 rebounds. Louis would also score seven points.Â
- Yazzy Sa'Duallah led UCI with a game high 19 points. She was 6-of-9 from the field and 4-of-7 from three point range. Sanders would chart 12 for the Anteaters.
- UC Irvine was outrebounded by CSUN 44-26, 22-14 on the offensive glass. The Anteaters forced 25 CSUN turnovers, resulting in 26 UCI points.
- "I thought we did a good job of executing on both ends of the floor for most of the game. We have to get better at closing out a team once we get a lead. We have to learn how to take a lead from 10 to 15 and from 15 to 20. Ultimately it is my responsibility. It is one game and we lost on the road. We will go back and get ready for a tough Hawai'i team that will be ready to play."
- CSUN stays on the road Thursday when the Matadors travel to Hawai'i. Tip is set for 9 p.m. PST/7 p.m. HST with coverage on BigWest.tv.
