UC Irvine Slips Past CSUN, 74-68
1/19/2019 8:16:00 PM | Men's Basketball
NORTHRIDGE, Calif.--- CSUN Men's Basketball (8-12, 2-2 BWC) could not hold off a second-half rally from UC Irvine (15-5, 3-1 BWC) in its 74-68 defeat on Saturday afternoon at The Matadome. Freshman Lamine Diane finished with 21 points, nine rebounds, four assists and four blocks while sophomore Terrell Gomez collected 21 points on 8-of-15 shooting. Junior Rodney Henderson Jr. added 18 points.
The Matadors led by as many as 18 points including by a 47-31 margin at the half but the Anteaters outscored CSUN 43-21 in the second half to pick up the victory.
UCI out-rebounded CSUN 51-30 in the game and collected 26 offensive rebounds which led to 36 second-chance points. The Matadors shot 46.7 percent for the game while the opposition was held to 35.8 percent shooting.
ACCORDING TO COACH MARK GOTTFRIED
"The biggest thing was the rebounds. We couldn't get a rebound – they had 26 offensive rebounds. That was name of the game. Our defense wasn't bad, it was actually good. We gave up way too many second-chance points."
I thought we played really well [in the first half]. I thought our running game was good as its been. We wanted to continue that. I think they slowed the game down a bit and got us to slow down. That was really more their style. We wanted to play more up-tempo."
FIRST HALF
The Matadors scored the game's first five points before the Anteaters went on an 8-2 run to take a 10-7 lead. CSUN trailed 20-15 at the 12:05 mark before catching fire from the field. Diane hit back-to-back jumpers to bring CSUN even at 22-22 and Cameron Gottfried gave the Matadors the lead on a 3-pointer with 7:20 left to play.
Eyassu Worku cut the lead to 29-27 on a 3-pointer but the Matadors answered with a 15-2 run capped by a driving layup from Diane. Gomez hit consecutive 3-pointers during the stretch while Diane picked up a block and a steal that led to Matador buckets on the other end. Henderson Jr. hit the final shot of the half from beyond the arc with 12 seconds left to push the CSUN halftime lead to 47-31.
SECOND HALF
After shooting 63.3 percent in the first half, the Matadors would shoot 30.0 percent after halftime as the Anteaters chipped away at the lead. Diane stretched the lead to 18 points on the first shot of the second half before the Anteaters scored on their next two possessions. Gomez stretched the lead to 55-42 on a jumper but UC Irvine countered with a 10-0 run to pull within three at the 10:16 mark.
Gomez kept the Matadors in front with a timely 3-pointer on the next possession, and Henderson Jr. would go coast-to-coast for a layup to push the lead to 61-52. Things though took a dramatic turn as the Matadors went without a basket for nearly the final six minutes of the game. After a Gomez layup that put CSUN up 65-60, the Anteaters scored the next 14 points.
Max Hazzard, who went scoreless in the first half, sparked the comeback with 13 points in the second half including a game-tying 3-pointer with 4:54 left to go. Evan Leonard hit perhaps deciding shot of the game from 3-point range at the 1:34 mark after an offensive rebound. Henderson Jr. ended a 6:15 drought with a 3-pointer with two seconds left.
GAME NOTES
Freshman Darius Brown II grabbed a career-high 10 rebounds and dished out six assists. Freshman Ron Artest III played 12 minutes and scored his first career point on a free throw in the first half.
The Anteaters have now won nine straight against CSUN including the last five at The Matadome. A total of 16 of the Matadors' 20 games this season have been decided by 10 points or fewer.
