SIMI VALLEY, Calif. - Mats Ege and Blake Brothers are both in the top-20 while the CSUN Men's Golf team is in 10th-place after two rounds of the Bill Cullum Invitational Monday at Wood Ranch Golf Club.
The Matadors carded an opening-round 302 before posting a 14-shot improvement in round two's 288. At (+14) 588, CSUN is 10th among 13 teams. San Diego State fired a blistering two-round team total of (-30) 546 and carries a 17-shot lead over Utah State (563) into Tuesday's final round.
Ege, who was tied for 31st after an opening-round 71, fired a three-under 69 in round two to move into a tie for 13th at four-under 140. Ege had 10 birdies over 36 holes on Monday along with an eagle three at the par-5 18th hole in round two. Brothers, competing as an individual, is tied for 16th at three-under 141 following rounds of 73-68. Brothers had five birdies in round one before adding six in round two's 68.
Gabriel Barnes, also competing individually, is tied for 31st at even-par 144 following rounds of 68-76. Barnes had a solid opening round with four birdies and 14 pars on his way to a four-under 68. After an opening-round 76, freshman Eirik Thomassen posted a six-shot improvement with a two-under 70 in round two and is tied for 46th at two-over 146.
Sophomore Paul-Louis Gachet is tied for 55th at four-over 148 following rounds of 78-70, freshman Brandon McDonough is tied for 77th at eight-over 152 following rounds of 77-75, sophomore Tomas Helgo is tied for 81st at nine-over 153 after rounds of 79-74, Michael Zhang is tied for 81st at nine-over 153 (78-75) and Sevian Frangipane is 95th at 14-over 158 (80-78).
San Diego State's Puwit Anupansuebsai holds a five-shot lead heading into the final round after blistering the Wood Ranch course with rounds of 63-66 to post a 15-under 129. Anupansuebsai  will head into Tuesday's final 18 holes with a chance to break the individual tournament record of (-14) 202 held by USC's Jonah Texeira (2016) and Cal State Fullerton's Derek Castillo (2017). Grand Canyon's Trevor Lampson is five shots back at 10-under 134 followed by three players at nine-under 133.
At 546, the Aztecs will also have a chance to break the tournament team scoring record (833) co-held by USC (2014) and UC Santa Barbara (2016).
Tuesday's final round gets underway with a shotgun start at 8 a.m. CSUN will be paired with Southern Utah, UC San Diego and UC Riverside for the final 18 holes.
