Matadors Fourth, Ege Ninth at Pacific Invitational

STOCKTON, Calif. - Behind freshman Mats Ege's one-under 71, the CSUN Men's Golf team is tied for fourth after one round of the Visit Stockton Pacific Invitational Monday at The Reserve at Spanos Park.
Ege, who is coming off a top-20 finish at CSUN's Bill Cullum Invitational last week, is tied for ninth after 18 holes. Fellow freshman Eirik Thompson is also in the top-15 after carding an even-par 72 as the Matadors posted a team round of 289. CSUN is tied for fourth with Santa Clara and Washington State, just seven shots behind team-leading San José State (282). Long Beach State (286) is second and Sacramento State (288) is third in the 16-team field.

"The guys really grinded it out today, I thought they all battled and played well. Heading into round two tomorrow, the key is to just stay in the moment, stay focused and compete and I think we'll put together another solid round."Â
The Matadors will be paired with Santa Clara and Washington State for round two which tees off Tuesday morning with tee times beginning at 8:39 a.m.

- Ege opened on the day on the No. 10 tee and was two-over after six holes before an eagle three at No. 16 brought him back to even-par. Ege made the turn with birdies on three of his first seven holes, along with a pair of bogeys to finish the day at one-under.Â
- Thomassen, who has a pair of top-20 finishes in three fall tournaments, is poised for a third after four birdies and four bogeys Monday left him at even-par 72.
- Junior Gabriel Barnes had two birdies and three bogeys and is tied for 25th at one-over 73.Â
- Sophomore Paul-Louis Gachet also had two birdies and three bogeys and is tied with Barnes at one-over 73.
- Junior Blake Brothers had one birdie and tied for second in the field with 14 pars but had a double bogey and quadruple bogey on the 17th and 18th holes to finish at six-over 78 which is tied for 75th.
- Senior Michael Zhang, competing as an individual, is tied for 80th at seven-over 79.
