Davila Picks Up Win #200 As CSUN Defeats No. 22/24 Fullerton 1-0

NORTHRIDGE, Calif.—CSUN head men's soccer coach Terry Davila picked up his 200th career victory Wednesday night as the Matadors defeated No. 22/24 Cal State Fullerton 1-0 in the Big West opener for both clubs.

- Omar Grey scored the lone goal of the match in the 25th minute. Julio Rubio took a corner kick and sent the ball towards the goal. Giovanni Aguilar settled the ball down and passed it to Grey who headed the ball in for his second goal of the season.
- The teams were mostly even, but play was physical in the second half. In the 77th minute, CSUN's Alex Lara was issued his second yellow card of the match for a tackle which resulted in a red and his ejection.
- The Titans (8-3-1) responded with a pair of attempts a little over a minute later. Tre McCalla's shot was saved by Matador goalie David Preys. The rebound came out in front where Sebastian Cruz's attempt went high.
- The 80th minute saw a Diego Useda shot blocked by the CSUN defense. Despite being a man down, the Matadors rushed towards the Cal State Fullerton net. Daniel Trejo put a ball towards Paul-Andre Guerin in front which was saved. The rebound came out to Rubio who had his attempt just go high.
- Cruz threatened in the 84th but his attack was blocked out of bounds, earning the Titans a corner kick. CSUN turned away the threat for a moment, but Mario Gomez took possession, but his shot was also blocked.
- The final Titans' rush came in the 87th minute, but Preys posted a save on a Justin Jovel shot.
- CSUN outshot Cal State Fullerton 19-14 for the night. Preys, a redshirt freshman, made five saves to earn his first career shutout.
- After being called for only two fouls in the first half, four of the eight Matador fouls in the second half resulted in either a yellow or red card. The Titans were whistled for 19 fouls and two yellow cards.
- Davila becomes the 47th active Division I coach with at least 200 career victories and is now the 157th Division I head coach with at least 200 wins. He is the second D-1 coach to reach 200 this season, joining California's Kevin Grimes.

- "It was a typical Big West game. It is hard to get victories in this league. Cal State Fullerton is a great team with a great coach and it was a great game. We prepare for situations such as going down a man. We didn't give them any clean looks in the final 10 minutes and that's what we are happy about. You have to score in a variety of different ways. We scored tonight off a set piece and a break went our way."
UP NEXT
- CSUN (6-4-1) travels to UC Davis Saturday for a 1 p.m. matchup that will be streamed by BigWest.tv. The Aggies defeated Cal Poly 1-0 in San Luis Obispo Wednesday night in UC Davis' league opener. UCD is 7-3-1 overall.
