Matadors Host Pepperdine in Home Opener

NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---CSUN Men's Basketball takes the floor at The Matadome for its home opener against Pepperdine on Tuesday night at 7 p.m. The game will stream live on the CSUN Sports Network presented by Dignity Health via BigWest.TV with Ghizal Hasan and Alan Zinsmeister on the call. The Matadors and the Waves are the second of a CSUN Basketball doubleheader with the women's team hosting Virginia in the opening game at 4 p.m.
CSUN Athletics will host the Northridge Toyota Fan Fest before the men's basketball game. The fan fest begins at 5:30 p.m. and will be held on the west patio of The Matadome. A live DJ will be on hand and CSUN Dining will provide tacos to students. Three fans will have the opportunity to win $500 by taking a mid-court shot during the men's basketball game. At the fest, fans can also take part in games such as MataPong, Corn-hole and Dual Basketball while True Barbershop will provide free haircuts.
The Matadors opened up the 2019-20 season last week on the road. CSUN fell twice, losing at Oregon State 87-67 and New Mexico 97-70. In each game, the opposition used a late first-half run to build a double-digit lead and never look back. Junior Terrell Gomez scored a team-high 19 points in defeat at Oregon State while junior Lance Coleman II made a strong debut for the Matadors, scoring a team-best 19 points at New Mexico.
Through the first two games, Gomez is averaging a team-high 16.5 points to go with 7-of-14 shooting from 3-point range. Coming off his big game against the Lobos, Coleman II is posting 13.5 points and 3.0 rebounds per game. Also scoring in double figures, sophomore Darius Brown II is averaging 11.0 points to go with 6.5 assists and 5.0 rebounds. Sophomore Elijah Harkless scored a career-high 15 points in the opener at Oregon State, putting his season totals at 9.0 points per game.
Gomez took over sole possession of second place on the Matadors' all-time career 3-point field goals made list last week. He moved ahead of Ian Boylan (2001-05) on the list and stands at 189 3-pointers. Gomez is just 40 treys away from breaking Josh Greene's (2010-14) all-time record 228 made 3-pointers. Elsewhere on the Matador career scoring list, Gomez is 19th all-time in points (1,036) but just five away from catching Todd Bowser (1,041) for 18th place and 18 away from tying Mark Cooley (1,054) for 17th place.
Pepperdine holds a narrow 10-9 edge over the Matadors in the all-time head-to-head series. CSUN snapped a two-game skid in the series last season with a 90-83 win at Firestone Fieldhouse. Lamine Diane posted a double-double of 29 points and 12 rebounds while Brown II posted 20 points and nine assists and Gomez added 19 points in the win. CSUN has not hosted the Waves at The Matadome since Dec. 2015 when Pepperdine claimed a 70-55 victory. In all-time home openers, the Matadors are 46-14.

The Waves kicked off the 2019-20 season on Tuesday, falling at California 87-71 before pulling off a come-from-behind win over UC Irvine 77-73 last Saturday. Pepperdine went 16-18 last season, finishing eighth in the West Coast Conference. The team has returned 10 letterwinners this season including three starters. Head coach Lorenzo Romar is in his second season since returning to the helm of the Waves.
Sophomore Kessler Edwards is averaging a team-high 17.0 points per game while junior Colbey Ross (16.0), junior Skylar Chavez (13.0) and senior Kameron Edwards (12.5) are also averaging in double figures. Edwards is the team's top rebounder at 7.0 per game. An All-WCC First Team selection, Ross led the Waves in scoring last season, averaging 19.4 points per game.
