CSUN Travels To UCSB For Big West Semifinal Match

NORTHRIDGE, Calif.-- After upsetting the third seed, UC Irvine Wednesday night, sixth-seeded CSUN travels to the second-seed, UC Santa Barbara Saturday in the semifinals of the Big West Tournament. The 7 p.m. start will be streamed on BigWest.tv with all links on GoMatadors.com.

The Gauchos finished the regular season 11-3-4, 4-1-2 in Big West play. UC Santa Barbara is ranked 15th in this week's United Soccer Coaches Top 25, 16th, in the Soccer American Top 25, 17th in College Soccer News Top 30, and 22nd in the TopDrawerSoccer.com Top 25.

Finn Ballard McBride leads the team in goals (9) and points (20). Ballard McBride, a four-time Big West Freshman of the Week selection this season, is tied for the league lead in goals with CSUN's Daniel Trejo and Cal Poly's Emmanuel Perez.

This is the 47th time that CSUN and UCSB are playing men's soccer with the Gauchos leading the all-time series 24-16-6. The teams played to a scoreless draw in Northridge on Oct. 26.

The winner of the CSUN-UC Santa Barbara match will play the winner of the other Saturday semifinal between the top-seed, UC Davis, and the fifth seed, Cal State Fullerton. The Titans defeated Cal Poly 2-0 in San Luis Obispo Wednesday night to advance to the semifinals.

RECAPPING ROUND ONE
CSUN defeated UC Irvine 3-2 in the first round of the Big West Men's Soccer Tournament Wednesday night.

Julio Rubio, Daniel Trejo, and Khalid Hunter scored goals to give the Matadors their second victory over the Anteaters in less than a week. The three goals represented the most for CSUN since Sept. 27 at Omaha (a 2-1 OT win) and the Matadors advanced to the Big West Tournament semifinals for the first time since 2016.

UCI, which outshot CSUN 17-7 for the match, trailed 3-0 before making a late push. The Anteaters received goals from Christian Gutierrez and Jose Ortiz in the 82nd and 89th minutes but could get no closer as Matador keeper Paul Lewis made four saves.
