FULL GAME NOTES
NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---CSUN Men's Basketball (2-10) continues non-conference action on Sunday afternoon against San Francisco State at The Matadome. Tip-off is slated for 3 p.m. with coverage beginning at 2:50 p.m. on the CSUN Sports Network presented by Dignity Health through BigWest.TV with Ryan Stanbury and Alan Zinsmeister on the call.
The Matadors dropped their third-straight close decision last Sunday at Pacific by a 79-73 final. CSUN fell behind by as many as 21 points in the second half before leading a furious rally in the final minutes. The lead shrunk to as little as five points with sophomore Darius Brown II having a chance to cut the lead to possibly three points with less than a minute to play. However, a crucial charging call was made after Brown II sunk a layup. The Tigers managed the clock in the final seconds to hold off CSUN.
Junior Terrell Gomez led the Matadors with 29 points on 10-of-17 shooting including going 4-of-5 from 3-point range. Fellow junior Lance Coleman II added 14 points off the bench while Brown II chipped in with 13 points. Sophomore Elijah Harkless grabbed double-digit rebounds for the second-straight game as he finished with 10 rebounds and seven points.
Sunday could potentially be a record-breaking night for Gomez who enters the game just four 3-point makes away from breaking Josh Greene's (2010-14) career mark of 228 triples. Gomez, who is also the Matador single-season 3-point record holder with 117, has 225 career 3-pointers in a little over two years with CSUN. The 5-8 junior also has 1,274 career points and could climb into eighth place on the Matadors' all-time career scoring list with 19 more points. Eighth place on the list is currently occupied by the school's all-time Division II scoring leader, Jim Malkin (1959-62).
Gomez, who entered the week as the nation's 3-point field goal and points leader, has settled into second place with 43 triples and third place with 271 points. In addition, Gomez is sixth in the country in points per game (22.6) and seventh in 3-point field goals made (92). Brown II comes into the week 12th in the nation in assist to turnover ratio (3.1). On the Big West leaderboard, Gomez is tops in the league in points per game, minutes per game (37.5) and free throw percentage (91.7). Brown II is currently ranked second in the league in assists per game (4.9) and assists to turnover ratio while Harkless is fourth in defensive rebounds per game (5.0) and sixth in rebounds per game (6.3).
The Matadors and San Francisco State have played 11 times in history with CSUN holding a narrow 6-5 edge. All 11 of those games took place when the Matadors played at the Division II level. CSUN is facing the Gators for the first time since picking up a 95-77 win on Dec. 8, 1989. In that last meeting, Derrick Gathers led the way for the Matadors with 21 points and 13 rebounds.
