LIHUE, Hawai'i - Paul-Louis Gachet and Michael Zhang each carded a one-over 73 to pace the CSUN Men's Golf team through the opening 18 holes of the John Burns Intercollegiate Thursday at Wailua Golf Course.
As a team, the Matadors posted a team round of 298 and sit 18th out of 20 teams competing in the tournament. No. 24 BYU leads the team competition after an opening round 280 while the Cougars' Peter Kuest and Washington State's Daniel Kolar lead among individuals at six-under 66.
Opening on the 11th tee, Gachet started with a bogey before posting par on his next 10 holes. A double bogey five at No. 7 dropped him to three-over before birdies on two of his final three holes moved him back to one-under on the day.
Zhang started on No. 12 and was one-under through five holes. The junior was still one-under after a birdie on the ninth hole but a double bogey on No. 10 and a par on his final hole left Zhang at one-over 73. Gachet and Zhang are currently tied for 42nd.
Also for CSUN, Tomas Helgo and Ryan Hoffenberg are tied for 76th at four-over 76. Helgo had a pair of birdies on the day while Hoffenberg had three birdies but also had a triple bogey (7) at the par four 11th hole.
Luis Calderon finished up the Matador scoring as he is tied for 103rd at seven-over 79. Gabriel Barnes is also competing individually and is tied for 86th at five-over 77.
"We started to make a bit of a comeback towards the end of the round," said CSUN head coach Jim Bracken. "This is just the first round and there's lots of golf left over the next two days. I hope today was our high round of the tournament, I'd be disappointed if we don't play better across the board tomorrow."
The Matadors will be paired with Hawai'i, UC Irvine and Washington State for round two which gets underway Friday at 8 a.m. local time.
