James Tosses No-Hitter, CSUN Splits on Day One at LSU
2/22/2019 9:37:00 AM | Softball
BATON ROUGE, La. - Sophomore Jillian James tossed her first career no-hitter and CSUN Softball pushed across single runs in the third and fourth innings to open the LSU Invitational with a 2-0 victory over Memphis Friday morning at Tiger Park.
The Matadors finished the day 1-1 after dropping a 2-0 decision to Stanford as the Cardinal scored single runs in the first and third innings while holding CSUN to three hits.Â
GAME 1
FINAL SCORE: CSUN 2, Memphis 0
LOCATION: Tiger Park - Baton Rouge, La.
RECORDS: Memphis 5-5, CSUN 4-5
HOW IT HAPPENED
• James recorded the no-hitter, the 68th in CSUN Softball history and first since Daphne Pofek in 2017. The seven inning no-hitter was the first by a Matador pitcher since Zoe Conley blanked Utah Valley, 3-0 on Feb. 25, 2015.
• James, who improved to 2-2 on the season, had eight strikeouts, while walking two.
• After two scoreless innings, the Matadors opened the bottom of the third with a Kira Cauley single. After Mackenzie Babbitt struck out, Haileigh Gonzalez was hit by a pitch putting runners at first and second. Megan Stevens followed with a single to center but Cauley was thrown out at the plate trying to score the first run of the game. With runners again at second and third, Jessica Alexander came up with a two-out single to score Gonzalez before Alexander was caught advancing to second to end the inning.Â
• In the fourth inning, Kiarra Crockett-Pope and and Pudi Hernandez walked to lead off the inning before Raquel Jaime advanced both runners with a sacrifice bunt. Autumn Cauthron drove in CSUN's second run with a groundout to first before the Tigers escaped further damage.
GAME 2
FINAL SCORE: Stanford 2, CSUN 0
LOCATION: Tiger Park - Baton Rouge, La.
RECORDS: Stanford 8-2, CSUN 4-6
HOW IT HAPPENED
• Elise Madison started in the circle for the Matadors and limited Stanford to one earned run on three hits over 2.1 innings of work. Kenedee Jamerson and James then combined to strike out five Cardinal hitters while limiting Stanford to one hit over the final 3.2 scoreless innings.
• Offensively, Stevens, Alexander and Aaliyah Swan each had a base hit while Stevens also got on base with one of two walks issued by Stanford pitching.
• After the Matadors got two quick outs to open the bottom of the first, Kristina Inouye reached on an error by Gonzalez. After a walk moved runners to first and second, Montana Dixon singled to center and Inouye came around the score when Babbitt bobbled the ball in center field.
• In the fourth inning, Emily Klingaman opened the frame with a single to center before advancing to second on a wild pitch. Inouye moved Klingaman to third with a groundout to second before Whitney Burks walked. Jamerson came on to replace Madison and Dixon's bunt to the first baseman scored the game's final run as Inouye scored from third.

ACCORDING TO HEAD COACH TAIRIA FLOWERS
"We did a good job in the first game of being aggressive at the plate. We strung together some quality at bats and it paid off. JJ threw a heck of a game and continued to make adjustments throughout. The second game against Stanford, we struggled stringing things together. We made a couple of costly errors and need to make more adjustments at the plate. We played two good teams and glad we get to get back out there tomorrow."
