GAME ONE RECAP
After the teams battled to an 8-8 tie through 11 innings on Friday afternoon, darkness halted the action, forcing the teams back onto the field this morning to complete the game.
Cruz Daddario worked around a leadoff single in the 12th inning but the Bulldogs struck for two runs in the 13th. An error at second base allowed Jack Krauel to score the go-ahead run with one out. Nick Nyquist picked up a two-out RBI single to push the lead to 10-8. Gonzaga right hander Alek Jacob hit Austin Elder to start the bottom of the 13th inning before retiring the next three batters in order to pick up the victory.
Sophomore Brandon Bohning finished with three hits in the game to go with an RBI while Denzel Clarke picked up two hits, three RBI and a home run. Clarke would help the Matadors stay alive on Friday with a game-tying RBI single to help push the game to Saturday. Senior Jayson Newman also added two hits and two RBI.
GAME TWO RECAP
Moore would toss a pitching gem in game two, striking out six batters on 114 pitches on the afternoon. On the offensive side, junior Robert Bullard collected two of the Matadors' five hits to go with two runs scored and his second home run of the season.
CSUN took advantage of a Gonzaga miscue in the first inning to stake to a 1-0 lead. Bullard singled to start the inning and later scored on an error by Carson Breshears. The Matadors added a run in the fifth and sixth innings in support of Moore. Bullard stroked a 1-2 pitch over the right-field wall to double the CSUN lead in the fifth. An inning later, Elder roped a one-out RBI double to bring home Angelo Bortolin to give CSUN a 3-0 advantage.
The early runs would be enough for Moore who retired 19 batters in a row after walking the first batter of the game on four pitches. During that stretch, Moore received quality defense including a strong play from Newman in the seventh inning. Still with a no-hitter in the frame, Isaac Barrera hit a grounder to first base that Newman snared. Newman decided to take the ball himself and dove, touching first base with his glove just before Barrera stepped on the bag.Â
Moore found himself in trouble after back-to-back CSUN errors in the seventh, which put Gonzaga runners at first and second base with two outs. The sophomore would pick up his defense by sitting down Troy Johnston on a fly out to center field.
Moore retired Guthrie Morrison then struck out Slade Heggen to start the eighth. Four outs away from the no-hitter, Moore would give up a single to Krauel on a 2-2 pitch. Unfazed, Moore retired four of the next five batters to finish off the win.
WESLEY MOORE ON HIS PITCHING PERFORMANCE
"I got in the zone, trusted my defense behind me and pitched to contact. I wasn't worried about the no-hit bid going on through the game. I was just worried about giving my team the best chance of winning. I was focused on pitch to pitch and not worried about the result.
It was a tough loss [in game one]. We battled both last night and this morning. Definitely, it was a huge series changer to win this game. Hopefully, we can keep the momentum going and win the series."
GAME NOTES
Moore is the first Matador to throw a two-hit shutout since Kenny Rosenberg accomplished the feat at Purdue in May 2016.
Three Matadors have reached base safely in all six games this year, which include Bortolin, Kyle Barret and Andrew Lucas. Bohning has recorded five multiple-hit games already on the season.Â
UP NEXT
CSUN concludes its series with Gonzaga on Sunday with a doubleheader beginning at 10 a.m. The second game will start 30 minutes after the conclusion of game one.
