CSUN Ninth, Sangha 10th at GCU Invitational

PHOENIX, Ariz. - Led by freshman Kiran Sangha's first career top-10 finish, the CSUN Women's Golf team finished ninth at the GCU Spring Invitational Sunday at the GCU Championship Golf Course.
After a team round of 303 on Saturday, the Matadors posted a 301 in round two which was completed Sunday morning after darkness fell on the Phoenix area before the round could be completed. CSUN then equaled its round one total with a final round 303 to finish ninth in the 20-team field at 907.
Individually, Sangha had the best tournament of her young career, posting a five-over 221 to notch her first career top-10 finish. After a season-low round of 70 in Saturday's opening round, the freshman from San Mateo finished with rounds of 76-75 to finish in a tie for 10th-place.
Senior Michelle Duan had the Matadors' best round of the day, firing a one-over 73 to move into the top-25 at nine-over 225. Duan, who posted rounds of 79-73-73 matched Singha with three birdies on Sunday to finish in the top half of the draw for the second straight tournament.Â
Brianna Steger posted her second round of 77, sandwiched around a second round 76, to finish tied for 49th at 14-over 230. Steger had a single birdie on Sunday but completed a consistent round with 13 pars. Ashley Phelps tied for 57th at 16-over 232, her best finish and low total for 54 holes this season. Phelps wound up with scores of 77-76-79.
Kayla Yn completed the CSUN lineup as she had her best round of the tournament Sunday with a final round 78. Yn, who tied for 80th at 22-over 238, completed rounds of 79-81-78.
"Proud of our efforts this weekend," said CSUN head coach Gina Umeck. "We are enjoying what we are doing and that's the very ingredient to success. I'm looking forward to seeing how far we can go this spring."
The Matadors will be in action again Mar. 11-12 as CSUN competes in the South Dakota State Invitational in Las Vegas, Nev.
