PULLMAN, Wash.---CSUN Baseball (8-8) dropped the rubber game in its three-game series to Washington State, 10-1, on Sunday afternoon at Bailey-Brayton Field. Freshman Austin Elder went 2-for-4 with a double while senior Jayson Newman supplied the Matador offense with an RBI hit. Out of the bullpen, freshman Blaine Traxel and junior Cruz Daddario tossed shutouts frames in defeat.
GAME BREAKDOWN
The Cougars jumped out to the early lead after a two-run double from Brody Barnum in the bottom of the first inning. CSUN starter Isaiah Nunez was able to get out of further trouble by inducing a 4-3 double play to end the first inning. However, Washington State tacked on two more runs in the second and three more in the third inning.
Three-straight hits, capped off by a two-run double from Dillon Plew made it a 4-0 game in the bottom of the second. In the third, Kodie Kolden brought in a run on a fielder's choice and Danny Sinatro delivered a two-run triple, putting the Matadors in a 7-0 hole.
Nunez (3-1) would throw his first clean inning in the fourth before being lifted in the fifth.
WSU starter Hayden Rosenkrantz shut out the Matadors through the first five innings as he stranded four base runners in scoring position over that span. Brandon Bohning was stranded at third in the first inning while Robert Bullard was left at second base in the third inning and Elder stayed at second base to end the fourth. Angelo Bortolin also hit a one-double in the fifth but Rosenkrantz struck out Denzel Clarke and retired Bullard to escape danger.Â
CSUN would finally crack the scoring column in the sixth with a timely two-out hit from Newman. After the first two batters were retired to start the inning, Elder rifled a double to right center field. Newman followed with an RBI single to center field to plate Elder.
The Matadors would leave leave runners in scoring position in the seventh, eighth and ninth innings as the Cougars held on for the comfortable win.
GAME NOTES
Newman's RBI hit extended his on-base streak to a team-high 14-straight games. The senior went 5-for-11 in the series with two RBI and two walks. This season, Newman has hit safely 11 of 14 games and is batting .404 with 15 RBI.
Freshman Andrew Lucas saw his first action on the mound in his Matador career in the seventh, as he retired two batters and yielded a run.
For Washington State, Sinatro and Garrett Gouldsmith each tallied three hits and two RBI in the Cougar win.
