BANDON, Ore. - Led by freshman Tomas Helgo, the CSUN Men's Golf team opened with a round of 309 and is in 13th place after one round of the Bandon Dunes Championship at Bandon Dunes Course.
At 309, the Matadors are currently seven shots out of the top-10 and just nine shots out of the top-five in the 17-team field. Only two of the 107 players in the field are under par through 18 holes.
"The conditions were tough today, a lot of good teams struggled," said CSUN head coach Jim Bracken. "Tomas played solid today even though he didn't putt very well. Tomas [Skajem] and Paul-Louis [Gachet] also played pretty well in the conditions, unfortunately we didn't get a fourth score. But we'll turn the page and look forward to tomorrow's second round and hope to be a little more consistent."
Helgo was one-under through 11 holes on Sunday before bogeys on three of his final seven holes dropped him to one-over for the day. With an opening round 73, Helgo is currently tied for ninth as he bids for his fifth top-20 finish this season.
Skajem had 14 pars and four bogeys on his way to a first round four-over 76 and is tied for 37th. Gachet is tied for 45th at five-over 77 after posting four birdies on Sunday while Ryan Hoffenberg is tied for 95th at 11-over 83 and Luis Calderon is tied for 100th at 13-over 85.
Ohio State (291) leads the team competition through 18 holes while Daniel Wetterich of the Buckeyes has a one-shot lead at three-under 69.
The Matadors will be paired with San Jose State, Denver and Oregon State for round two which begins Monday morning at 8:30 a.m.
