No. 23 CSUN Splits on Day One of Indiana Classic

BLOOMINGTON, Ind.---No. 23 CSUN Water Polo (7-11) earned a split on the first day of the Indiana Classic on Saturday. The Matadors' rally came up short in an 11-10 loss to No. 15 Wagner in the morning game but CSUN bounced back with an 11-9 victory over Cal State East Bay.
Tori Wilson racked up five goals in the two matches while Madasonne Butler and Katia Andon-Mateos scored four apiece. In net, sophomore Emma Pfister posted 18 saves on the day.
Game One Recap
The Matadors were led in the first match by Wilson who tallied four goals, four assists, and two steals against Wagner. Jennalyn Barthels, Butler and Andon-Mateos scored consecutive goals in the final quarter to try and erase a four goal deficit, but Wanger held on for the one-goal win.
Erica Hardy kicked off the scoring for Wagner with a goal in the game's first minute to give the Seahawks the early advantage. CSUN quickly countered with a power-play goal from Andon-Mateos to even the scoring. Hardy would then comeback with two more goals to stretch the lead to two. Wilson scored on an assist from Butler that would end the quarter at 3-2 in favor of Wagner. In the second, a defensive battle ensued with CSUN holding the Seahawks scoreless in the frame. The Matadors would add a goal as well to tie the scoring at 3-3 thanks to Wilson.
At the beginning of the third quarter, the Seahawks came out firing with a power-play goal and a second strike in the opening minute. Hardy followed with her fourth goal of the day which made the game 6-4. Goals by Philippa Nash, and Jacqui Sjogren put the Seahawks on top by their biggest lead of the contest at four. Kylee Jansen and Barthels added goals in the quarter but ultimately CSUN surrendered seven in the eight minutes. Wagner led 10-7 entering the fourth quarter, and they would add another to begin the fourth to make it 11-7. Despite the deficit, the Matadors showed resilience as Andon-Mateos, Barthels and Butler scored consecutive goals in the game's final minutes. However, Wagner held on to its one-goal lead over the final 3:48 of the contest to squeak out an 11-10 decision.
Pfister finished with 12 saves in the contest while Butler and Barthels added two steals apiece.

Butler posted a hat trick in the afternoon match to lead CSUN in scoring in a near wire-to-wire win over Cal State East Bay. Barthels picked up four assists while Emma Franck added three helpers. Wilson would also notch three steals in the victory.
In the first quarter, CSUN collected its first two goals on power plays as Butler and Andon-Mateos opened up the scoring. The Pioneers would score three unanswered to take their only lead in the match at 3-2 but Butler scored a goal in the final minute to even the game after eight minutes. The second quarter belonged to the Matadors where they scored four times. Andon-Mateos and Barthels both scored on power plays in the second period while Franck and Sara Dempsey also got into the scoring act to make it a 7-4 match at halftime.
After intermission, the Pioneers drew closer on early goals from Adrien Van Dyke and Payton Bosque. CSUN would pick up a key goal from Dempsey and Wilson added another to her total on the day to push the lead to three. Auriel Bill brought the Pioneers within 9-7 after three periods on a late strike.
The teams went back-and-forth in the fourth period with each squad notching two goals. The Pioneers trimmed the Matador lead to 10-9 with 4:40 left to play but Franck struck the net less than a minute later. The Matadors' defense held firm in the final minutes, keeping CSUEB off the scoreboard the rest of the way to notch the win.
