No. 20 CSUN Takes Home-Opener Versus Saint Francis, 12-3

NORTHRIDGE, Calif.-- On a rainy, and windy Wednesday afternoon, No. 20 CSUN Water Polo (10-11) defeated Saint Francis decisively 12-3 during CSUN's home opener at Matador Pool. Â
Eight different Matadors hit the back of the net as Katia Andon-Mateos and Jennalyn Barthels led the way with seven goals combined between them. Defensively Emma Pfister tallied six saves while the team had 15 steals total. The Red Flash and the Matadors went punch-for-punch in the first quarter with the score even at three after one quarter. CSUN would then score nine unanswered goals in the game's next three quarters to seal the victory for the Matadors.
In the first quarter, the Red Flash got on the scoreboard first with a shot from Ani Aghakhanian followed by a strike from Breanna Dupperon to put Saint Francis up by a pair to begin the match. CSUN tied the score off the back of a Tori Wilson strike and an Andon-Mateos goal. The junior from Sunnyvale, evened the score while also tallying the first of her match-leading four goals.
After the Matadors tied the score at two apiece. The Red Flash took their final lead of the game off a powerplay goal from Dupperon, making the score 3-2. Andon-Mateos scored her second goal and evened the score for the second time with just under two minutes left to play in the first quarter.
The Matador defense would be the story for the rest of the match as the Red Flash would be shut out from scoring for the next three quarters. Four different Matadors scored in the second quarter, with Barthels tallying two and Andon-Mateos adding another. Kylee Jansen added a goal herself to continue her good play to start the season.
Maddasonne Butler, Ashlee Sellung, Alessia Marquez all scored in the second half, adding on to the CSUN lead piece by piece.

"Our team got off to a slow start giving up three goals in the first quarter, but then our team defense was outstanding, shutting them out the rest of the game."
UP NEXT:
The No. 20 Matadors hit the road next as they will play in the Aztec Invitational hosted by SDSU. CSUN is scheduled to play UC San Diego at 9:15 a.m. followed by Fresno Pacific at 4:45 p.m.
