MOORPARK, Calif. – Brianna Steger and the CSUN Women's Golf team's remarkable run at the 2019 Big West Championship came up just short as Steger and the Matadors both finished second following Wednesday's final round at Moorpark Country Club.
Long Beach State opened the final round with a three-shot lead over the host Matadors before posting a final round 297 while CSUN posted a 302. The 49ers (886) wound up defending their 2018 conference crown by holding off the Matadors (894) by eight shots.
CSUN's second place finish is its best at the Big West Championship since also finishing second in 2014. The Matadors' 54-hole team score of 894 is best by a CSUN squad in 18 years at the Big West Championship. The 2019 Matadors finished 17 strokes better than CSUN's previous low team score of 911 at the 2014 Big West Championship at San Luis Obispo Country Club.
Steger, who earned Honorable Mention All-Big West honors, held the individual lead for the first two rounds before being overtaken by Long Beach State's Haley Tygret over the final 18 holes. Steger posted a final round of five-over 77 on Wednesday to finish 54 holes at one-over 217. The CSUN junior was one-over through 10 holes before finishing four-over over her final eight holes.
Steger and Tygret, playing in the same final group, traded the lead at times over the final round before Tygret pulled away with three birdies on the back nine to claim individual champion honors.
Freshman Kiran Sangha also rallied on the final day, posting a two-under 70 to finish tied for third in her first conference championship. Sangha had a solid round of three birdies and 12 pars as she finished at five-over 221 (76-73-72).
"This was a very special week for us, so proud of our student-athletes," said CSUN head coach Gina Umeck. "They were tenacious and played with their hearts. Brianna and Kiran finishing second and third is just awesome and I'm so proud that we are building a cohort of strong and confident young women."
Seniors Michelle Duan and Kayla Yn both finished in the top-20 as each played in her final tournaments for the Matadors. Duan finished tied for 15th while Yn tied for 18th. Duan made a charge on the final day as she was two-under through nine holes. She finished the back nine five-over to complete her career with a score of 12-over 228. Yn, who was the low CSUN player at the 2018 Big West Championship, had a pair of birdies as she finished at six-over 78 for the day and 13-over 229 for the championship.
Ashley Phelps rounded out the Matador scoring as she finished 37th at 34-over 250 after a final round 89 on Wednesday.
UC Davis placed third following a three-round score of 901 and UC Irvine moved up two spots to fourth place (912). There was a three-way tie for fifth as Cal Poly, Cal State Fullerton and UC Riverside all carded 913. Hawai'i rounded out the eight-team field with a total of 923.
CSUN Big West Championship Notes - Steger's second place finish is the best by a CSUN player at the conference championship since Clariss Guce tied for first in 2014. Beth Allen and the Matadors won back-to-back Big West Championships in 2003 and 2004.
