Matadors Fall to Top-Ranked UCLA
4/2/2019 10:43:00 PM | Baseball
LOS ANGELES, Calif.---CSUN Baseball (12-17) suffered a 10-1 defeat at the hands of No. 1 UCLA (21-5) on Tuesday evening at Jackie Robinson Stadium. The Matadors trailed by just three runs entering the home half of the sixth before the top-ranked Bruins scored six over two innings to pull away.
Â
GAME BREAKDOWN
Facing one of the top pitching staffs in the country in UCLA (fourth in the nation in ERA), the Matadors would be held to three hits on Tuesday while the Bruins scored multiple times in three innings.
Â
The Bruins struck first in the bottom of the second, picking up four hits while capitalizing on two CSUN errors to stake to a 4-0 lead. Ryan Kreidler delivered with a two-run double in the frame while a third run came in via a throwing error at third base. Chase Strumpf capped off the inning with an RBI double to left center. Â
Â
Cruz Daddario worked in and out of trouble in the bottom of the third inning. After retiring the first batter, Daddario surrendered two-straight singles and a walk to load the bases. He would battle Noah Cardenas to a 3-2 count before inducing an inning-ending 6-4-3 double play.
Â
UCLA starter Jesse Bergin frustrated the Matadors through the first five innings, allowing no hits over that span. CSUN managed just one base runner through five innings until Andrew Lucas led off the top of the sixth with a single.
Â
In their best scoring chance of the night, the Matadors loaded the bases with nobody out in the sixth. Lucas would single through the left side before Jose Ruiz drove a single through the right side. Denzel Clarke followed with a perfectly placed bunt near the left of the mound for another base hit. CSUN though settled for one run in the inning after Brandon Bohning grounded into a double play and Robert Bullard flew out to end the inning.
Â
The Bruins extended their lead to five runs in the home half of the sixth. With runners at the corners and two outs, Michael Toglia hit a fly ball to left field that a diving Clarke could not grab. Toglia raced to third base as two Bruins touched home plate.
Â
In the seventh, UCLA broke the game wide open, capitalizing on two CSUN errors to plate four runs. Strumpf delivered the big blow with a three-run double that extended the lead to 10-1.
Â
GAME NOTES
Lucas stretched his on-base streak to nine-straight games while Ruiz has reached base in seven in a row.
Â
Eight CSUN pitchers saw action in the game as Daddario worked the most out of the bullpen with 1.2 shutout innings. Dwayne Angebrandt worked a scoreless bottom of the eighth.
Â
