Matadors Power Past UC Riverside, 14-5
4/5/2019 7:37:00 PM | Baseball
ACCORDING TO HEAD COACH GREG MOORE
"It was a little bit of home cooking. We like it here. We've played good baseball over the last four games, aside from one game on Tuesday night. Today we put it together a bit. I thought we played really good defense. And the offense obviously put up runs. I thought our takes were as good as they've been all year. We walked plenty, and on the other side of the ball we didn't walk them much."
GAME BREAKDOWN
After being held to five runs over the last four games, the Matadors' offense exploded in the bottom of the first inning as 12 batters came to the plate in a six-run frame. Robert Bullard began the inning with a bang as he tripled into the gap in the right-center field. After Barret walked, Skelly stroked an RBI single to put the Matadors on the scoreboard quickly. Austin Elder would double in another run while a third run came in via a wild pitch. Jose Ruiz added another to the run column with an RBI single.
CSUN later loaded the bases with two outs in the first inning before a Yeager Taylor error at first base allowed Angelo Bortolin to touch home plate. Barret capped off the scoring barrage with an RBI single to extend the Matador lead to 6-0 after one inning.
The Matadors would be far from done as they sent 10 more hitters to the plate in the bottom of the second. Ruiz opened up the scoring with a one-out home run that sailed over the left field wall. The next three Matadors reached base safely to load the bases then Blake Doremus came through with a two-run single to right center. Two batters later, Barret delivered again with another RBI single to make it a 10-0 game.
Pitching with the lead, Moore blanked the Highlanders through the first two innings but ran into trouble in the top of the third. The first two Highlanders reached base to start the inning before Connor Cannon hit a towering three-run blast to center field, cutting CSUN's lead to 10-3.
Moore though found his groove in the middle innings as he retired seven-straight batters at one point to keep the Matadors comfortably in front.
CSUN added two more runs in the fourth when Skelly belted a two-run homer to left. Taylor brought the Highlanders closer with a solo home run in the sixth but Skelly would answer with another two-run shot in the home half of the frame, pushing the lead to 14-4.
Moore exited the game in the sixth, giving way to the Matador bullpen. Blake Schriever would work 1.1 innings, allowing a run while Dwayne Angebrandt and Stone Shiffman tossed shutout innings apiece to secure a 14-5 win.
GAME NOTES
After a four-hit day, Barret has now tallied a team-high 14 multiple-hit games. Finishing with two hits, Andrew Lucas has reached base in 10 consecutive games.
CSUN's 14 runs are the team's most in a Big West Conference game since beating UC Riverside 15-3 on April 7, 2013 at Matador Field.
