CSUN Rallies Late to Top California Baptist, 7-4
4/23/2019 8:59:00 PM | Baseball
RIVERSIDE, Calif.---CSUN Baseball (17-22) scored four runs over the last three innings including three in the ninth to rally and defeat California Baptist (24-16) 7-4 on Tuesday evening at Totman Stadium. Freshman Andrew Lucas went 3-for-4 with four RBI including a home run and a go-ahead RBI double in the ninth while junior Blake Doremus hit a game-tying home run in the seventh and finished with two hits. Out of the bullpen, sophomore Blake Schriever stuck out a career-high six batters over 3.1 shutout innings to pick up his second win of the season.
GAME BREAKDOWN
The Lancers collected key two-out hits in the first two innings against CSUN starter Blaine Traxel to build an early 2-0 lead. With runners at the corners, Damon Keith stroked an RBI single to center field to put CBU on the scoreboard. An inning later, Nick Plaia doubled to kick off the inning before scoring on a two-out RBI single from Luke Navigato.
Â
CSUN battled back to take the lead in the third as the Matadors collected a big hit from their leadoff hitter. Doremus began the inning with a single up the middle then Denzel Clarke drew a walk to bring Lucas to the plate with nobody out. Lucas would go the other way with a drive that just cleared the right-field wall for his fifth home run of the season to put CSUN on top 3-2.
Â
The seesaw battled continued in the home half of the third. Cruz Daddario entered the game and retired the first two batters of the inning before three-straight Lancer hits, capped off by a two-run double from John Glenn, gave CBU the lead once more.
Â
Daddario would rebound after a rocky third inning to retire nine-straight batters at one point. CBU ended the string with a two-out double from Harrison Spohn in the sixth. Blake Schriever came out of the bullpen and fought Navigato to a 3-2 count before striking him out to strand the runner in scoring position.
Â
Held off the scoreboard since the third inning, the Matadors received timely hits in the late innings to take back the momentum. In the seventh, Doremus fell behind into a 1-2 count before fighting back to a full count against CBU reliever Matt Amrhein. Doremus then roped the next pitch over the right-center field wall to tie the game at 4-4.
Schriever would give up a leadoff double in the seventh before retiring three of the next four batters. An inning later, the right hander picked up two more strikeouts in a 1-2-3 frame, setting the stage for the Matadors' heroics in the ninth.
Josh Cerpa drew a leadoff walk in the ninth and eventually advanced to third base on a groundout and wild pitch. Clarke would foul out near the first base line before Lucas stepped to the plate in the crucial part of the game. Lucas hammered a 1-1 pitch up against the wall in left center to plate the go-ahead run.
Moments later, CBU third baseman Andrew Bash would commit a throwing error on a grounder from Sean Skelly that brought in another run. Kyle Barret capped off the inning with a high drive that smacked off the left field wall to plate pinch runner Damiano Palmegiani, giving CSUN a 7-4 lead.
CBU would fight to its last out against Schriever in the bottom of the ninth, bringing the tying run to the plate with two outs. However, Schriever shut the door by retiring Billy Rockefeller for the game's final out.

ACCORDING TO HEAD COACH GREG MOORE
"Our quality at bats came late in the game. I'm proud of how they stayed after it to work for that to happen. We didn't play well early in a few facets but you have to give the group credit, they continued to play.
Â
"[Doremus] was above the ball all day. You could see a good at bat coming. He put one together [in the seventh] and he got a pitch a little up in the zone. He's so strong that anytime he gets his bat out front, it's going a long way."
GAME NOTES
Barret finished 2-for-4 with an RBI to pick up his team-best 15th multiple-hit game of the season. Daddario would pitch a season-high 3.2 innings in the game, allowing two runs while picking up three strikeouts.
For CBU, Chad Castillo went 3-for-5 with a run scored.
