LONG BEACH, Calif.---No. 22 CSUN Water Polo (14-19) fell in heartbreaking fashion to No. 13 Long Beach State 7-6 in the fifth-place match of the Big West Tournament Saturday morning at Ken Lindgren Aquatics Center. Sophomore Sara Dempsey headed the Matadors offensively with two goals, while Jennalyn Barthels, Tori Wilson, Lindsey Garcia, and Kylee Jansen all added solo goals of their own. Sophomore Emma Pfister tallied 14 saves in a defensive showdown with the 49ers.
The 13th-ranked 49ers (16-15) and the Matadors fought tooth and nail for six periods with no team giving an inch for close to the entirety of the match. Long Beach State scored the deciding goal in the second overtime when Orsi Hertzka, the Big West leader in goals, added her third goal of the contest with a little over a minute remaining in the second overtime. Hertzka's hat trick led all scorers.
GAME BREAKDOWN
Defense was the name of the game in the first quarter with both teams playing solid for the first eight minutes. A powerplay goal by Hertzka was the first goal of the morning as the 49ers took the lead to begin. The Matadors quickly responded thanks to a powerplay goal from Barthels with help from freshman Alessia Marquez who tallied her first point of the tournament. The score would remain at one apiece heading into the second.
The second quarter would see the 49ers gain a one-goal advantage heading into the break.
CSUN would begin the quarter by taking their first lead of the contest due to an even strength goal from Dempsey, her first of two, while Katia Andon-Mateos assisted on the play. After CSUN took a narrow lead, the 49ers answered back with a lead of their own. Annabel Harman notched a powerplay goal to even the scoring yet again. Long Beach State would go on top due to another powerplay strike, this time from Olivia Grimm. The score remained 3-2 as the halftime whistle sounded.
As the teams entered the pool once again, CSUN tied the game thanks to Garcia. The senior netted an even strength shot for her final goal of her Matador career. The 49ers gained the advantage shortly after, as Marilia Eleni Mimidi fired a shot to make it 5-4 in favor of Long Beach State. A powerplay goal by Wilson would even the scoring for the fifth time in the match as the junior from Ontario notched her team-leading 63rd goal for the year. Wilson would finish the season fourth in the Big West. Hertzka notched a penalty shot to put the 49ers on top by one as teams faced what they thought was the final period.
The CSUN defense came up clutch in the fourth quarter allowing no goals. Going into the fourth only down one, CSUN needed an equalizer and that came in the form of a powerplay strike from freshman Jansen with help from Wilson. A potential Hertzka game-winning attempt was stopped by Pfister with less than 30 seconds to play. The game went into extras after a missed shot from Wilson to end the fourth.
In the first overtime, no teams were able to get on the board as both defenses applied pressure throughout the extra time. Pfister stopped two key shots from the 49ers in the first overtime, keeping the game tied heading into the final three minutes.
CSUN's defense remained on point until Hertzka scored her third and final goal to seal the victory for the 49ers.
