LIHUE, Hawai'i - The CSUN Men's Golf team posted its best round of the tournament Tuesday (296), moving up one spot to sixth place at the conclusion of the 2019 Big West Championship at Wailua Golf Course.
Cal State Fullerton (876) won the team championship as the Titans had three players shoot under-par in the final round to post a tournament-low 284. Fullerton finished with an eight-stroke victory over UC Irvine (884). UC Davis (886) finished third followed by UC Santa Barbara (892), Hawai'i (895), CSUN (896), Long Beach State (896), UC Riverside (908) and Cal Poly (916).
"We're disappointed we didn't play better but in the big picture we're a young team and we gained some valuable experience this year," said CSUN head coach Jim Bracken. "Tomas (Helgo) and Paul-Louis (Gachet) both had really good freshman seasons but the bottom line is, as a team, we just weren't consistent enough."
Playing in his third and final conference championship, senior Tomas Skajem was CSUN's top finisher as he tied for 12th at six-over 222. Skajem, who's best finish at the conference championship was eighth in 2017, was at even-par through 11 holes on Tuesday before making bogey on three of his final seven holes. With a three round total of six-over 222, Skajem posted his third-lowest round of the season.
Gachet and junior Michael Zhang also finished in the top-20. Gachet (+7, 223) had four birdies on Tuesday on his way to a three-over 75 while Zhang made one of the biggest leaps of the final round, moving up from 31st into a tie for 17th at eight-over 224. After an eagle at the par-5 13th, Zhang was three-under through 10 holes. A birdie and a pair of bogeys to finish off the round left Zhang at two-under 70, CSUN's best round of the championship.Â
"We got a really good round out of Michael today and Tomas had a solid tournament and could have finished in the top-10 but three-putted his last hole for bogey," added Bracken.
Also for the Matadors, Luis Calderon carded a final round 77 to finish tied for 35th at 16-over 232 and Tomas Helgo tied for 42nd at 22-over 238 following a final round 76, his best of the tournament.
Fullerton's Matt Wilson captured individual medalist honors, topping UC Davis' Thomas Hutchison by four shots.Â
