4/8/2019 8:10:00 PM | Men's Golf
CHANDLER, Ariz - Freshman Tomas Helgo is tied for 26th while the CSUN Men's Golf team is 19th after two rounds of the Wyoming Cowboy Classic Monday at Whirlwind Golf Club.
Helgo was one-over through nine holes in round one when he encountered trouble over his next four holes. A pair of bogeys and a double bogey dropped Helgo to five-over before he rebounded with a birdie at No. 5. He then had a hole-in-one on the par-3 sixth hole before posting birdies over the final three holes to get to one-under for the round.Â
In round two, Helgo added three more birdies in a consistent round of one-under 71 to finish the day tied for 26th at two-under 142. Fellow freshman Paul-Louis Gachet is tied for 71st at four-over 148 following rounds of 75-73. Gachet totaled three birdies over the first 36 holes.
Also for the Matadors, Tomas Skajem is tied for 99th at nine-over 153 (79-74) while Luis Calderon and Michael Zhang are tied for 108th at 12-over 156 as each finish with rounds of 80-76.
As a team, CSUN posted rounds of 305-294 for a 23-over total of 599. UCLA (558) leads the team competition, holding a two-shot lead over Cal State Fullerton (560). John Murdock of Wyoming and Cole Maday of UCLA share the individual lead at eight-under 136.
COACH JIM BRACKEN SAID
"We played better in the second round so I'm pleased with that. We played ok in the afternoon but all in all it was a frustrating day. This team has some talent, we just need to play an entire round consistently instead of just a few holes of good golf."Â
The Matadors will be paired with Gonzaga, Old Dominion and Utah State for Tuesday's final round which gets underway ay 7:30 a.m.
