Â
With the game tied at 8-8, the Matadors took advantage of two USF errors in the top of the 11th to scratch across two runs. Schriever worked his way through a jam in the home half of the 11th, leaving two runners on base to nail down the win.
Â
GAME BREAKDOWN
The Matadors flexed their muscles in the first two innings to stake to an early five-run lead. In the first, both Jose Ruiz and Skelly worked walks before Doremus hammered a three-run home run to right field to give the Matadors a 3-0 lead.
Â
The Dons would strike back in the bottom of the first on a solo home run from Jack Winkler but CSUN answered with another long ball of its own in the second. After Barret reached on a passed ball and Ruiz singled, Skelly stroked a three-run shot over the left-center wall, making it a 6-1 game.
Â
Isaiah Nunez retired six of the first seven batters to start the game but the Dons cut into the lead beginning in the third. Riley Helland came through with an RBI double with two outs then Jonathan Allen added a two-run triple. The Dons collected an unearned run as well after a throwing error from third base.
Â
With its lead down to one, the Matadors came away with a timely two-out hit to add to their lead in the fourth. Denzel Clarke and Barret started the frame with singles before Ruiz moved both runners up on a sacrifice bunt. CSUN eventually loaded the bases for Andrew Lucas who delivered a two-run double, putting CSUN ahead 8-5.
Â
Nunez again seemed in control when he pitched a perfect fourth and retired the first two batters in the fifth. However, a throwing error on a Winkler grounder opened the door for the Dons. Helland would drive in an RBI double and eventually score on a Nunez balk to bring USF within 8-7.
Â
An inning later, San Francisco evened the game up behind a one-out RBI single from RJ Cordeiro.
Â
After the teams combined for 16 runs through the first six innings, neither side could break through over the next four innings.
Â
The Matadors left two runners on base in the ninth inning while Blake Schriever came on in the bottom of the ninth to retire the last two batters and leave the winning run at third base. In extra innings, CSUN left three more runners on base in the 10th before finally breaking through in the 11th. Â
Â
Robert Bullard struck out to start the 11th but he ended up reaching second base on a dropped third strike and throwing error from catcher Chase Hodkinson. CSUN again loaded the bases after Brandon Bohning reached on a dropped third strike as well and Damiano Palmegiani walked. Moments later, Clarke hit a hard grounder to third base, which Riki Urata stopped. Urata attempted to force out the runner at home but an errant throw allowed Bullard and Bohning to score the go-ahead runs.
Â
In the home half of the 11th, USF cut the lead to one on an RBI single from Jordan Barchus. The Dons eventually put runners at first and third base against Schriever with the game on the line. Schriever would go to work on the mound, striking out Tyler Villaroman before yielding a wild pitch to put two runners in scoring position. Winkler then roped a low line drive to Bohning but the CSUN shortstop made the catch to end the game.
GAME NOTES
Blaine Traxel worked 3.0 shutout innings, striking out two while allowing three hits. Nunez finished with 5.1 innings on the mound, allowing eight runs but only five of those runs were earned. Clarke picked up two hits in the victory while Barret, Ruiz and Skelly all scored twice.
For USF, both Helland and Allen has two hits and two RBI.
