9/8/2019 9:03:00 PM | Men's Soccer
NORTHRIDGE, Calif.—A five-goal second-half outburst powered CSUN past the University of San Francisco 6-0 in men's soccer action Sunday night.
HOW IT HAPPENED
· The Matadors opened the scoring 5:24 into the first half. Omar Grey sent the ball to Brendan Hildreth who sent a pass toward the goal where Johnny Rodriguez headed in the assist for his fourth goal of the season.
· Just four minutes into the second half, Alex Lara headed in an Ehi Isbor throw in to set the Matador offense into motion.
· Daniel Trejo posted his fourth of the season at the 56:49 mark. Julio Rubio's corner kick found Lara who headed the ball towards the goal where Trejo converted.
· Kris Fourcand charted the next two CSUN goals. He scored in the 60th minute from a Rubio corner kick. In the 74th minute, Samuel Salter took advantage of a USF turnover, sending the ball towards Fourcand on a run where he scored from five yards out.
· Esteban Camacho wrapped up the Matador scoring in the 76th minute when he redirected a Maximillian Yanakaev free-kick into the back of the Dons' net.
· CSUN goalies Paul Lewis and David Preys combined for the shutout with Lewis making both of the Matadors' saves on the night.
· CSUN outshot USF 22-8, 10-2 on goal. CSUN recorded seven corner kicks compared to four for the Dons.
· The six goals are the third most in a match at the Division I level by a CSUN squad, marking the sixth time since the Matadors moved up in 1991 that CSUN put up six in a match.
· The Matadors' eight assists are the fifth most in a match at the D-1 level (the third time that it has occurred) while the 20 points are the fourth most at the Division I level by CSUN (the third time that the Matadors had 20 points in a match).
· 24 players saw the pitch for CSUN with Lara playing the most minutes of any Matador with 73. CSUN's 3-0-1 start is the best for the program since 2013 when the Matadors opened the year 7-0.
· The Dons fall to 0-3 and have been outscored 15-0 and outshot 70-14 this season.
ACCORDING TO HEAD COACH TERRY DAVILA
· "We were concerned about USF not playing on Friday night and us having a Friday night game. We had to put a lot of work in against a tough Utah Valley team and not get the result we wanted. Tonight, meant a lot to us. It tested our character and our will and how deep we are. When you play Friday-Sunday, and how our league is set up, you have to have a deep squad to compete at the highest level."
