CSUN Hosts Cal State Fullerton Thursday; At Long Beach State Saturday

NORTHRIDGE, Calif.—After a strong opening week of Big West play, CSUN (7-9, 2-0 Big West) returns to court this week for a pair of games. The Matadors host Cal State Fullerton Thursday night at 7 p.m. David Gascon will have the call on Thursday beginning with a pregame show at 6:50 p.m. on BigWest.tv.
Cal State Fullerton opened Big West play last by defeating UC Santa Barbara and Long Beach State. The victories extended the Titans' winning streak to six and moved Cal State Fullerton to 10-5 overall. The Titans are the top-scoring team in the Big West Conference (71.3) and have the league's top individual scorer in Rain Perez. Perez is averaging 21.5 points per game which is the eighth-best in Division I to begin this week. Perez is third in Division I in made field goals (132), eighth in points (322), 15th in minutes played per game (37.3), and 19th in field goal attempts (258). This is the 55th meeting between CSUN and Cal State Fullerton. The Matadors have won 17 in a row in the series dating back to Jan. 14, 2011 when the Titans defeated CSUN 75-67 in Fullerton. Cal State Fullerton has not defeated the Matadors in Northridge since Feb. 28, 2008 (55-45).
CSUN hits the road for the first time in league play Saturday when the Matadors face Long Beach State. The tip is set for 2 p.m. and will be streamed by BigWest.tv as well. Long Beach State split a pair of games to open Big West play last week. The Beach defeated Cal Poly 72-69 at home last Thursday before losing 69-65 at Cal State Fullerton on Saturday. Long Beach State is 6-9 overall. Shanaijah Davison is eighth in the Big West in scoring (14.1). Ma'Qhi Berry leads the league in steals (2.3) and is fourth in field goal shooting (50%). As a team, the Beach lead the conference in steals per game (10.4). This is the 63rd meeting between CSUN and Long Beach State with the Beach leading the all-time series 42-20. The Matadors swept the season series from Long Beach State last season.
For the third time this season, CSUN senior forward De'Jionae Calloway was named Big West Conference Women's Basketball Player of the Week Jan. 13. Calloway averaged 19.0 points, 13.0 rebounds, 1.5 steals and 1.5 blocked shots per game to help the Matadors upend Hawai'i (58-54) and UC Irvine (70-62) at home. CSUN has started out Big West play 2-0 for the first time since the 2012-13 season. Calloway notched her fifth and sixth double-doubles of the season to lead the Matadors. She scored 22 points to go along with 12 boards in the win over UH before posting 16 points and 14 caroms against UCI. She played 36 minutes in both games.
The Lee's Summitt, Mo. native made 10-of-20 floor shots and had three blocks with a steal against the Rainbow Wahine. She added two assists and a pair of steals versus the Anteaters. Calloway registered her fifth 20-point game of the season with her 22-point effort against UH. Her efforts also garnered her second College Sports Madness Big West Player of the Week selection. Calloway leads the team in scoring (15.1), rebounding (8.7), and field goal shooting (.473). She is third in the league in rebounding, fifth in scoring and eighth in field goal shooting.
