HOW IT HAPPENED
- After a 6-2 Cal State Fullerton (10-6, 2-1 Big West) start, the Matadors mounted a 10-0 charge that would put the Matadors up by six. De'Jionae Calloway posted five of her 10 first-half points in the run. CSUN would lead 14-9 at the end of the first period. CSUN held the Titans scoreless for the next seven minutes. taking a 20-15 lead.
- Deja Williams connected on a jump shot with 4:42 remaining in the first half. The Titans kept the Matadors off the board for the final 4+minutes, scoring the final 10 points of the half, taking a 25-20 lead into halftime. Carolyn Gill scored six of her nine first-half points during the scoring stretch.
- The Cal State Fullerton run would climb to 15-2, making the score 30-24 in favor of the Titans. CSUN responded with 13 of the next 15 points to lead 39-32. The Titans came right back, scoring eight in a row, highlighted by back-to-back Amiee Bock three-pointers. The score would 42-41 in favor of Cal State Fullerton heading into the fourth quarter.
- The Titans pushed the lead to 50-45 midway through the fourth quarter. De'Jionae Calloway scored four in a row to cut it to one before Bock struck again, this time with a layup with just under three to play. Henderson tied the game a little over a minute later. Raina Perez, the Big West's leading scorer (21.5 ppg), sank a jump shot in the paint on the next Cal State Fullerton possession. Calloway tied the game with 23.4 seconds to go with a layup. Cal State Fullerton called timeout. The Titans ran the clock to one second when Bock attempted a three-pointer. The shot was blocked by Calloway, sending the game to overtime.
- Jordyn Jackson opened the scoring in the extra period with a layup 55 seconds in. Ashlee Ane tied the game for the fourth and final time with just over two minutes to play. Henderson broke the tie with a jumper deep in the left corner for a 62-56 score at the 2:01 mark. The score would remain 62-56 until Henderson's three from the left side with 37 seconds remaining. The Matadors could have put the game away, but CSUN missed all four free-throw attempts in the final 20 seconds. The CSUN defense was able to turn away the Titans' final three field-goal attempts to earn the victory.
- CSUN improves to 3-0 in Big West play for the first time since 2012-13 when the Matadors recorded the program's top Big West start at 4-0. The only other time that the Matadors have started the league schedule 3-0 was in 2004-05. CSUN has won five in a row, the longest winning streak for the Matadors since 2016-17 when CSUN won a school-record nine consecutive games.
- This was the 18th consecutive victory for CSUN in the all-time series against Cal State Fullerton dating back to Jan. 14, 2011 when the Titans defeated CSUN 75-67 in Fullerton. Cal State Fullerton has not defeated the Matadors in Northridge since Feb. 28, 2008 (55-45). CSUN now leads the all-time series 28-27. The loss broke a six-game Titans' winning streak.
- Calloway recorded her third consecutive and seventh double-double of the season as she posted a game-high 25 points and a game-high 11 rebounds. Henderson recorded 11 of her 14 points in the second half and overtime. Bock paced the Titans with 22 points. Carolyn Gill had 13 while Perez was limited to 11. The Matadors reset the school Division I record for most steals in a game with 23. CSUN broke the old mark of 22 which was tallied on two different occasions, the most recently at Pacific on Feb. 28, 2004. The Matadors scored 29 points off of the 29 Cal State Fullerton turnovers in the game.
- CSUN is the only undefeated Big West team remaining. Cal State Fullerton, UC Davis, and UC Santa Barbara are all 2-1 heading into weekend games.
ACCORDING TO HEAD COACH JASON FLOWERS
- "I thought we did a pretty good job of making some tough shots. We gave up some easy baskets at times. It came down to toughness. I thought our toughness wasn't there at times, which almost cost us the game. We had a timeout at the end of regulation and I challenged our group and they responded. De'Jionae down the stretch made some big baskets and if anything epitomizes where our team is now from where we were at the beginning of the year is the play at the end of regulation. Bock had a wide-open look. De'Jionae gave everything she had and she blocked the shot as the buzzer goes off. Meg hit a big three to put us up in overtime. Our kids just made plays and I am proud of them."
- CSUN (8-9) hits the road for the first time in Big West play Saturday when the Matadors travel to Long Beach State (6-10, 1-2 Big West). The tip is set for 2 p.m. and will be streamed by BigWest.tv.
