Matadors Head To UC Irvine Thursday

NORTHRIDGE, Calif.-- For the second time in 12 days, CSUN faces UC Irvine in Big West women's basketball action Thursday night. This time, the Matadors travel to Irvine for the matchup. The tip is set for 7 p.m. and will be streamed by BigWest.tv as well. The links for the game will be available on GoMatadors.com.
UCI is now 5-12, 1-2 in Big West play after defeating Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo 68-57 last Saturday. Haleigh Talbert is coming off of back-to-back 23-point games for the Anteaters. Talbert has scored in double-figures in four consecutive contests. Lauren Saiki, the Anteaters' point guard is leading the team in scoring at 11.6 points per game. She is averaging 6.9 assists per game which paces the Big West Conference and is fourth in Division I entering this week. Her total of 118 assists is the third most in Division I. The Matadors defeated the Anteaters 70-62 Jan. 11 in Northridge. This is the 58th meeting between CSUN and UC Irvine with the Matadors leading the all-time series 30-27.
CSUN defeated Cal State Fullerton 63-57 in overtime Jan. 16 for the first 3-0 Big West Conference women's basketball start for the Matadors since the 2012-13 season. CSUN's five-game winning streak was halted by Long Beach State Jan. 18 when The Beach defeated the Matadors 60-52. CSUN enters this week with an 8-10 overall record. The Matadors reset the school Division I record for most steals in a game against Cal State Fullerton when CSUN made 23 steals. The Matadors broke the old mark of 22 which was tallied on two different occasions, the most recently at Pacific on Feb. 28, 2004.
Steals have been a strength for CSUN this season. Meghann Henderson is second in the Big West in the category as she is 2.1 steals per game. As a team, the Matadors are second in the conference as the Matadors are averaging 10.1 steals per game. De'Jionae Calloway averaged 20.5 points and 9.5 rebounds last week. Calloway charted her third consecutive double-double and her seventh of the year with 25 points and 11 rebounds against Cal State Fullerton last week. She leads the team in scoring (15.7), rebounding (8.8), and field goal shooting (.471). The 6-0 forward is second in the league in rebounding, third in scoring and fifth in field goal shooting. She is also fourth in the Big West in steals per game (1.78).
