1/23/2020 9:17:00 PM | Women's Basketball
IRVINE, Calif.—CSUN defeated UC Irvine 56-51 to improve to 4-1 in Big West Conference women's basketball play Thursday night in the Bren Events Center.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- A 4-0 CSUN start forced the Anteaters into a timeout at the 7:37 mark of the first quarter. The Matadors forced 11 UCI turnovers in the first quarter and would hold the 'Eaters to three field goals. CSUN led 12-6 after 10 minutes of play.
- UC Irvine (5-13, 1-3 Big West) scored the first points of the second quarter. The Matadors responded with an 11-0 run that featured six straight from De'Jionae Calloway. CSUN extended the lead to 23-8 before Dani Guglielmo sank a three-pointer that ended the spurt. Thanks to 14 points off of a total of 17 UCI turnovers, the Matadors took a 32-17 lead into halftime.
- CSUN posted the first five points of the second half to take a 20-point lead with 7:57 to play in the third quarter. UCI came back with the next eight to make it a 37-25 game heading into the media timeout. The Anteaters kept CSUN off the board for nearly five minutes, extending the run to 10-0 before a Deja Williams free throw broke the drought at the 2:52 mark. The Anteaters recorded the final five points of the frame to cut the CSUN lead to 43-36 heading into the fourth period.
- The first scoring of the fourth quarter did not come until Guglielmo's fifth-three-pointer of the game at 6:39, making it 43-39 in favor of the Matadors. CSUN tallied its first points of the fourth on a pair of Jordyn Jackson free throws just over a minute later. The teams traded baskets for a 48-41 score at the media timeout.
- Joy Akaegbu-Cleveland's layup out of the media cut it to 48-43 with 3:55 remaining. The clubs drained the clock to 2:14 when Hayley Tanabe drove the lane for a layup and basket to extend the advantage to 50-43 in favor of the Matadors. UCI brought the ball across half court and called timeout with 2:09 left in the period.
- Calloway made a steal as CSUN took time off the clock. The Matadors were whistled for a team turnover but ran the time down to 1:28. Lauren Saiki missed a three-point attempt which Megan Henderson grabbed the rebound. Time was called as the referees looked a ball that went out of bounds. The play was ruled in favor of the Matadors, but Calloway missed a jumper, giving UCI the ball with 55 seconds to play.
- UC Irvine called timeout to advance the ball to half court. A set play for Ggulielmo worked as she made a long three-pointer for a 50-46 score. CSUN called time out with 56.1 seconds remaining. Jackson was fouled nine seconds later. With the Matadors in the bonus, she made both.
- Talbert hit a three the next time down for the Anteaters. UCI forced a turnover and passed the ball to Gulielmo who just missed a three-pointer to tie the game. Williams was fouled on the rebound. She sank both for a 54-49 game. Talbert drove and her pull-up jumper created a 54-51 game with 16.5 seconds to play. CSUN called timeout and advanced to half court. Jackson was fouled on the inbounds pass as nearly two seconds came off the clock. The 5-4 sophomore made both. Saiki received the inbounds pass and pulled up for a three-pointer. The shot was long. The rebound was tied up with UCI being awarded possession with 4.9 seconds to go. The Anteaters could not get a shot off as the Matadors earned the victory.
- UCI held CSUN to 5-of-28 shooting in the second half and 18-of-57 for the game (31.6%). The Matadors forced 28 Anteaters' turnovers, scoring 22 points. CSUN made 20 steals, led by Calloway who had six. CSUN limited UC Irvine to 19-of-50 for the game from the field (38%).
- Jackson led the Matadors with 14 points. She was 6-of-6 from the free throw line. Henderson scored 12 points and grabbed a team-high nine rebounds. Guglielmo led all scorers with 18 points. Talbert had 16 while Sophia Locandoro added 11 points and nine rebounds
ACCORDING TO HEAD COACH JASON FLOWERS
- "Anytime you can get a win on the road in conference is good and we will take it. I thought we did some things really well in the first half. I thought different people stepped up and there was balance offensively. De'Jionae was big-time defensively in the first half. In the second half we struggled to make some shots and it snowballed offensively. Defensively we were still solid, but we gave their shooters some open looks. At the end, we have to do a better job of closing out the game when we have a lead and not allow it to get close and allow them to get extra possessions. That's on me. I have to do a better job of preparing our group of what we need to do down the stretch."
UP NEXT
- CSUN (9-10) is off until Wednesday, Jan. 29 when CSUN travels to UC Davis (8-9, 3-1 Big West). Coverage on BigWest.tv begins at 6 p.m.
