Matadors Blank USF 8-0 on Opening Day
2/14/2020 5:46:00 PM | Baseball
NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---Sophomore right hander Blake Sodersten pitched six shutout innings as CSUN Baseball (1-0) blanked San Francisco (0-1) 8-0 Friday on opening day at Matador Field. Sodersten struck out seven batters and scattered three hits to pick up the victory. Senior Blake Doremus finished 3-for-5 with a two-run home run and two runs scored while fellow senior Jose Ruiz went 2-for-3 with three runs scored.
GAME BREAKDOWN
CSUN struck first behind the bat of Doremus in the opening inning. After Ruiz hit a one-out double down the left field line, Doremus clobbered the first pitch he saw from starter Riley Ornido well over the right field fence to put the Matadors on top 2-0.
Sodersten pitched around a leadoff hit to open the game to retire the next four batters before a one-out single from Thomas McCarthy in the second inning. He would strike out the next two batters to end the second then face the minimum over the next three frames. Riki Urata finally ended a string of 13-straight retired Dons with two outs in the top of the sixth. Sodersten though forced the next batter, Jack Winkler, to ground out to the end the frame.
Ornido tip-toed around a bases loaded jam in the second inning and stranded two runners in the fourth to keep the deficit at two runs. In the fifth, he was lifted from the game and the Matadors jumped all over the USF bullpen. Reliever Bo Jelinek served up back-to-back hits to Ruiz and Doremus to start the bottom of the fifth. Two batters later, Sean Skelly delivered with a line drive single up the middle to plate a run. After another pitching change on the mound, Carlos Arellano stroked a two-out RBI single to score Doremus. Mason Le then reached on a throwing error by Brandon Greim that resulted in two more runs for CSUN, making it a 6-0 game.Â
CSUN added a single tally in the sixth on a sacrifice fly from Newman, scoring Ruiz who walked earlier in the frame. Mason Le also stroked an RBI triple in the seventh to drive in the Matadors' eighth run of the afternoon
The Matador bullpen took over in the top of the seventh as Jackson Cunningham retired the side in order. An inning later, Cunningham faced a bases loaded, two-out jam when head coach Dave Serrano went to the bullpen. Elijah Garcia would take the hill and strike out Winkler on three pitches to keep the Dons off the scoreboard. Gavin Lizik pitched around a single and walk in the ninth to secure the shutout win.
ACCORDING TO HEAD COACH DAVE SERRANO
"I'm happy for them on getting our first win. I told them [today's win] doesn't mean a lot on in the big picture. Our goal is to keep getting better everyday. We're going to go over the details that we need to improve on but I'm very happy. Sodersten set the tone early, he was really good. He threw a lot of strikes. For the most part, we played really good defense and we threw strikes. I think the defense complimented the pitching and then we got timely hitting. We had some at bats where some guys failed but a teammate picked them up. Cunningham's good inning in the seventh inning was big and Garcia coming in to get the big strikeout to pick up Cunningham in the eighth - little things like that are going to be big down the line if we continue to throw as a team."
GAME NOTES
Four Matadors made their CSUN debut in the starting lineup on Friday. Junior Kai Moody led off for the Matadors and went 1-for-3 with two walks while juniors Jason Ajamian and Arellano each went 1-for-4. Freshman Mason Le also finished 1-for-3 with a walk. Out of the bullpen, Garcia and Lizik also made their CSUN debuts.
The Matadors' opening day shutout win is the team's first since beating Portland 6-0 in the 2017 season opener.
UP NEXT
CSUN goes for the series victory tomorrow afternoon when it continues its three-game set with San Francisco. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m. Ross Porter will call the action in an audio broadcast on the CSUN Sports Network presented by Dignity Health at 12:45 p.m.
