Matadors Complete Series Sweep of USF with 5-3 Win
2/16/2020 4:54:00 PM | Baseball
NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---Senior Jayson Newman delivered a two-run double to break a tie in the eighth to help propel CSUN Baseball (3-0) to a 5-3 win and a series sweep of San Francisco on Sunday afternoon at Matador Field. Junior Kai Moody picked up two hits and two runs to to go with a home run while Sean Skelly had two hits and a home run as well. Out of the bullpen, senior Cruz Daddario tossed 1.1 innings to earn the victory.
GAME BREAKDOWN
In a similar script to the past two games of the series, the Matadors got on the scoreboard first in the opening inning. Leading off the home half of the first, Moody roped a 2-1 pitch just over the left field wall to put the Matadors ahead 1-0.
Daniel Vasquez stranded two base runners through the first two innings before USF broke through in the third. With one out, Tyler Villaroman stroked a solo home run to left field to even the game at 1-1.
CSUN would lean on its top of the order to grab the lead right back in the home half of the third. Moody roped a one-out double before stealing third base. Ruiz drove in Moody on a sacrifice fly to center. In the the fourth, the Matadors doubled their lead with a one-out home run by Skelly.
Vasquez cruised through a 1-2-3 fourth inning and retired the first two batters to start the fifth. Up next, Villaroman reached on an infield single to keep the inning alive for Riki Urata. Vasquez was lifted from the game, giving way for Jeremy Hassel who hit Urata and surrendered a two-run double to Jack Winkler to even the game. Michael Cartwright would relieve Hassel and battle Jacob Munoz to a full count before striking him out to keep the game squared at 3-3.
CSUN had a difficult time figuring out reliever Julian Washburn who entered the game in the fourth and left two CSUN base runners stranded. Washburn would go on to retire 11-straight CSUN batters until one out in the eighth inning.
Meanwhile, Cartwright worked his way through a jam in the sixth, leaving two Dons on the base paths. In the seventh, USF threatened once more as Villaroman picked up a leadoff single before stealing second base with one out, which forced an intentional walk of Winkler.
With runners at first and second, Munoz sent a high-fly ball into deep right field. Andrew Lucas raced to the warning track and pulled down the fly ball with a leaping catch. The highlight-reel play kept the ball in play and three runs off the scoreboard. Daddario finally squashed the rally by retiring Thomas McCarthy.
The game remained tied until the bottom of the eighth when the Matador bats finally came alive. Washburn served up consecutive one-out singles to Ruiz and Blake Doremus, bringing up Newman to the plate. Newman would rope an 0-1 pitch down the right field line for a two-run double to put the Matadors in front 5-3.
After pitching two shutout innings on Saturday, closer Blake Schriever entered in the ninth looking for the save. It would not be easy though as Jacob Westerman hit a leadoff single before Urata reached on an error at second base with one out. With the game on the line, Schriever remained steady and retired Winkler and Munoz to secure the save.
GAME NOTES
The trio of Carlos Arellano, Moody and Skelly each hit safely in all three games in the series. Skelly went 4-of-9 with two RBI in the series while Ruiz finished 3-for-7 with six runs scored and Moody went 5-for-12 with four runs scored. Newman racked up seven RBI over the weekend.
The Matadors' series sweep of the Dons is the team's first sweep of three or four games to open a season since the 2002 season. That year, CSUN also swept USF in a three-game series at Matador Field.
ACCORDING TO HEAD COACH DAVE SERRANO
"I'm really proud of these guys. As I just told them in the huddle, in the first weekend we competed as a team. As their coach, I'm proud of how they stayed in character. It's not just about the three wins. I try to not get caught up in the results like that. It's about how they played. I'm glad we came out on top but I welcome this close game because we were able to grow through that. There were some tough situations. They tied the game and we were able to fight through some adversity, win some battles on the mound and win some battles at the plate. That's how we're going to build as a team and a program as we go farther in the season because we're going to be in games like this when we play good teams. I welcome that and I'm glad they stayed within themselves and made the plays, the pitches and swung the bats at the right time."
