Bullpen Leads CSUN Past Washington State, 3-1
2/17/2020 6:04:00 PM | Baseball
NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---Five Matador relievers combined to yield only one hit over six shutout innings as CSUN Baseball (4-0) defeated Washington State 3-1 on Monday afternoon at Matador Field. Sophomore Dwayne Angebrandt earned his first career victory with two shutout innings in relief while four other Matador hurlers threw an inning apiece out of the bullpen. Senior Jose Ruiz drove in two of the Matadors' three runs and fellow senior Jayson Newman homered for the first time this season. CSUN broke a 1-1 tie in the fifth and added an insurance run in the seventh to close a 4-0 homestand.Â
GAME BREAKDOWN
Earning his first career start, Gavin Lizik ran into trouble in the first inning as the Cougars loaded the bases with one out. The freshman right hander rebounded though by striking out RJ Lan and retiring Tyler Lasch. An inning later, Lizik would get an assist from catcher Sean Skelly as the Matador backstop threw out Preston Clifford attempting to steal second base to end the frame.
The Cougars took advantage of a Matador error to plate the game's first run in the third inning. Kyle Manzardo reached on a fielding error with one out and would later score on a two-out hit from Lan. Lizik limited the damage by forcing Lasch to lineout to right field, stranding two runners on the base paths.
Tanner West allowed just one hit through the first three innings before Newman flexed his muscles in the fourth with a game-tying solo home run.
CSUN would take the lead an inning later behind heads up base running. Denzel Clarke walked and stole second base with one out before Kai Moody drew a walk. A failed pickoff from West allowed the runners to moved up to second and third base with Ruiz at the plate. Ruiz then hit a ground ball to short, freezing Clarke in-between third and home plate. A rundown ensued with Clarke eventually sliding back to third base. Moody was then caught in a rundown, leading to Clarke racing for home plate where he slid in safely just ahead of the throw.
Angebrandt took over on the mound in the fourth and went on to retire the side in order. In the fifth, Skelly picked off Garrett Gouldsmith in-between first and second base before Angebrandt retired Jack Smith for another shutout inning.
Newman made the move to the mound in the sixth and sat down the side in order. The Cougars would threaten in the seventh against Jackson Cunningham after Nelson Padilla walked and was sacrificed to second base. Padilla eventually made it to third base with two outs but Cunningham kept the Matadors in front when he forced Gouldsmith to ground out.
CSUN added an insurance run in the seventh inning on a two-out hit from Ruiz. With runners at first and second base, Ruiz roped a single through the right side, scoring a hustling Mason Le for the Matadors' third run.
The Matador bullpen wrapped up the game with 1-2-3 innings in the eighth and ninth. Elijah Garcia struck out two batters in a clean eighth and Blaine Traxel worked a shutout ninth to earn the save just two days after throwing six quality innings against San Francisco.
GAME NOTES
After a 1-for-3 effort, Arellano has hit safely in all four games this season. Le finished with two hits and a run scored for his first career multiple-hit game. Hit by a pitch in the seventh, Blake Doremus has reached base safely in eight-straight games, going back to last season.
As a group, the Matador bullpen combined for five innings of work with one hit and one walk allowed to go with four strikeouts. Traxel's save was his third of his Matador career.
ACCORDING TO HEAD COACH DAVE SERRANO
"I've been coaching a long time and there are not many times that we've played four times in a weekend and we're going to do it for four-straight weekends. We've got one of them out of the way. It is taxing. I've talked to many of our peers out there and even those who feel good about their pitching staff say that would be hard on them. Luckily some guys stepped up and allowed us to get through it. I would never do what I did today with Traxel, after going Saturday, but he's that type of guy. There's no strain on him. He asked for the ball if we had the lead and I was comfortable with that.
I don't think we played good today. We won, the end result wasn't bad but I thought we were flat today. We haven't played four games in a row. Even in our practices and scrimmages we haven't done that. It's taxing on the body and we have to get used to that. It's going to be an endurance test as we move on."
UP NEXT
CSUN now sets its sight on the next 12 games all played away from Matador Field over the next three weekends. The Matadors will play four games at the GCU Classic hosted by Grand Canyon starting Friday to open up the long stretch. CSUN takes on Fordham at 1 p.m. and Grand Canyon at 5 p.m. on Friday to open the event. The Matadors take on Fordham again on Saturday at 1 p.m. before closing with Grand Canyon on Sunday morning at 9 a.m. (all times Pacific).Â
