CSUN's Fourth Quarter Rally Falls Short As UCSB Hangs On For Win

SANTA BARBARA, Calif.— UC Santa Barbara withstood a furious fourth-quarter CSUN rally to defeat the Matadors 65-60 In Big West women's basketball action Thursday night in the Thunderdome.
HOW IT HAPPENED
CSUN held UC Santa Barbara scoreless for the first 5:15 of the first quarter. UCSB missed their first eight field goal attempts as the Matadors led 2-0 at the first quarter media timeout. The Gauchos finally broke through at the 3:42 mark with a Danae Miller three-pointer. UC Santa Barbara ended the first quarter on a 11-0 run and led by nine after 10 minutes of action.
UC Santa Barbara connected on 7-of-14 second quarter field goal attempts as the Gauchos took a 32-15 lead into halftime. The Gauchos made nine steals in the first half, forcing 13 CSUN turnovers, that were turned into 10 points.
After trailing by 19 early in the third quarter, CSUN mounted a 16-4 charge that was capped off by Deja Williams' second consecutive three-pointer with 2:12 to play in the period. The Gauchos called timeout which resulted in 1-of-2 Danae Miller free throws. UCSB outscored the Matadors 7-2 out close the third period out. The Gauchos would end up with a 47-36 lead heading into the fourth.
The UCSB run would end up being 16-6, resulting in a 56-40 lead for the Gauchos early in the fourth quarter. The Matadors fought back, climbing to 10, 58-48, with just over two minutes to go. Miller's layup with 1:50 remaining pushed the advantage back to 12. De'Jionae Calloway's jumper at the 54-second mark made it 60-50. CSUN forced a UCSB turnover seven seconds later.
Jordyn Jackson drove the lane for a successful layup and a 60-52 score. The Gauchos called timeout with 40.8 seconds remaining. The Matadors forced a jump ball with 24.5 seconds left and called time out with the possession. Deja Williams was fouled when she made a three-pointer with 14.2 seconds to go. Williams's free-throw attempt was good for to create a 60-56 score.
UCSB called timeout to advance the ball. Johnni Gonzazlez was fouled as just two seconds came off the clock. Gonzalez missed the first free-throw attempt, but made the second. The Matadors called their final timeout to advance the ball. Hayley Tanabe drove the lane and sank a layup at the 8.7-second mark to cut it to 61-58. UC Santa Barbara called their final timeout to advance the ball.
Gonzalez was fouled again with less than a second coming off the clock. Gonzalez made both free throw attempts. Tanabe again drove the lane for a basket and a 63-60 score. With 2.3 seconds left, Miller was fouled. She made both to put the game away and make it the final 65-60.
This was the second game in a row in which the Gauchos defeated CSUN after UCSB's 65-55 victory last Saturday night. Miller scored a game-high 21 points. Ila Lane charted 19 points and grabbed 12 rebounds for UC Santa Barbara (11-14, 6-6 Big West).
Williams was 7-for-9 from the field as she posted a team-high 20 points. Calloway recorded her eighth double-double of the year as she scored 18 points and nabbed 15 rebounds. Jackson had 11.
CSUN held the Gauchos to 39.8% shooting for the game (20-51). The Matadors posted a 44.8 shooting percentage (26-of-58) as CSUN went 19-of-34 in the second half. The Matadors forced 18 UCSB turnovers, making six steals. CSUN turned it over only three times in the second half.

"Our kids did an outstanding job of coming back down the stretch and continuing to play and continuing to fight. If you look at the boxscore, you will see the combination of struggling to put the ball in the basket and turning it over just killed us in the first half. We did a much better job in the second half, only turning the ball over three times. I'm proud of our kids in fighting all the way to the end."
