FULLERTON, Calif.—CSUN defeated Cal State Fullerton for the 19th consecutive time Saturday night as the Matadors defeated the Titans 57-50 in Big West women's basketball action Saturday night. The streak dates back to Jan. 14, 2011 when the Titans defeated CSUN 75-67 in Fullerton. CSUN now leads the all-time series 29-27.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- CSUN jumped out to a 10-4 lead as Deja Williams and Jordyn Jackson each scored five points in the first five minutes of the game. Out of the break, back-to-back Meghann Henderson three-pointers pushed CSUN to its largest lead, 16-6, of the quarter. The Titans responded with five in a row thanks to consecutive Raina Perez field goals. CSUN ended the period with an 18-11 lead.
- The Matadors took an 11-point lead (22-11) with 8:59 to play in the second when Hayley Tanabe connected on a pair of free throws. The Titans responded with a 7-0 spurt that was capped off by a Kathryn Neff field goal. With CSUN leading 26-18, Cal State Fullerton switched to a zone defense. The zone slowed the Matadors down as CSUN only scored six points over the final 3+ minutes of the half. The Matadors were able to use their zone to limit the Titans to three points over the final 3:25 of the opening stanza. CSUN took a 32-25 lead into halftime.
- The Matadors got off to another strong start, opening the second half on an 8-1 run which resulted in a Cal State Fullerton timeout with 7:18 to go in the third quarter, trailing 40-26. Trailing 43-30, the Titans scored the next seven in a row. Tanabe's three-pointer ended the spurt. Lauren Shymkewicz's rebound and put back returned the lead into double-digits at 48-37. Amiee Book's three-pointer with 31 seconds remaining in the frame would be the final points for either team as CSUN led by eight going into the fourth quarter.
- The Matadors would go without a point for over five minutes before Henderson sank a three-pointer 3:13 into the fourth quarter. The Titans closed to within four during the span. At the media timeout, CSUN led 51-46. Cal State Fullerton reduced the score to four when Perez made 1-of-2 free throws with 3:03 to play. The Titans cut it to 51-49 at 2:07 on a Carolyn Gill jumper.
- CSUN called timeout. The Matadors ran the shot clock down to xxx before a Jackson layup with 1:36 to go. The Titans ran 14 seconds off the clock before Carolyn Gill was fouled. She made 1-of-2 free throw attempts to make it 53-50. The Matadors turned the ball over with 55.6 seconds remaining. Cal State Fullerton called timeout. Taylor Turney missed a three-pointer. CSUN got the rebound and was fouled with 31.2 seconds. The Titans were under the limit and fouled again two seconds later. Cal State Fullerton fouled again as two more seconds came off the clock. De'Jionae Calloway recorded her ninth double-double of the year with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Jackson scored 12 points and had seven rebounds. Henderson posted 11 while Williams had 10. Perez scored a game-high 18 for Cal State Fullerton (14-11, 6-6 Big West). Book charted a double-double of 11 points and 13 rebounds. Gill added 10.
ACCORDING TO HEAD COACH JASON FLOWERS
- "It was a good team win, and I am proud of our team for closing it out. It came down to the end and we needed to make some stops and make a couple of buckets. Our kids stayed with it and showed a lot of grit. I thought Hayley was aggressive which helps us be better. Meg was solid and efficient on the offensive end. It was an all-around team effort and all the credit goes to our kids."
