Ege Fires Opening-Round 66 at Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate

PALM DESERT, Calif. - Freshman Mats Ege fired a season-low 66 and is two shots off the lead after the opening-round of the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate Friday at The Classic Club.
Ege, who came in with a season-low round of 68, bettered that with seven birdies on his way to a six-under 66. The freshman is currently second to Oregon's Tom Gueant who posted an eight-under 64 in round one. Junior Blake Brothers is also in the hunt after posting an opening-round one-under 71 which is good for 20th-place after 18 holes.
As a team, the Matadors opened with an even-par 288, their lowest in seven rounds this spring. CSUN is sixth in the 21-team field heading into Saturday's second round.

"We played some really good golf today but we still made some mistakes which cost us a few shots. But I was pleased to see the guys battle back; we played the back nine at nine-under as a team so I'll take that every time."
The Matadors will be paired with Colorado, Fresno State and North Texas for round two which tees off Saturday morning beginning at 7:50 a.m.

CSUN SCORES
- Ege was three-under on both the front nine and back nine Friday to finish the day at six-under 66. He was three-under through 12 holes when he birdied both the 4th and 5th holes to get to five-under for the round. After a bogey and par over the next two holes dropped him to four-under, Ege birdied his final two holes to get to six-under.
- Brothers made the turn at four-over before catching fire on his back nine. He birdied five of the nine holes on the front nine to before a par-five at No. 9 left him at one-under 71 for the day. had four birdies on the day also got as low as three-under before bogeys on two of his final three holes dropped him to one-under 71.
- Eirik Thomassen triple-bogeyed his first hole of the day before playing virtually error-free the golf the remainder of the round, finishing at three-over 75.
- Sophomore Paul-Louis Gachet also had a triple bogey but countered with a pair of birdies on his way to a four-over 76. Fellow sophomore Tomas Helgo is one shot back of Gachet at five-over 77.
