HOW IT HAPPENED
- Long Beach State opened the game by scoring the first four points. From the 7:47 point where Lauren Shymkewicz scored for CSUN, the Matadors outscored the Beach 20-4 to take a 12-point lead. Long Beach State scored eight straight points to begin the second. The Beach was able to reduce the Matador lead to 20-16 before Shymkewicz scored the first points of the quarter for CSUN at the 4:45 mark.
- The Beach cut it to 22-17 15 seconds later when Aaryon Green sank a pair of free throws. The Matadors held Long Beach State without a point for the final 4+ minutes of the half. Led by Meghann Henderson who scored 10 in the first half, CSUN led 31-17 at the break. Only four players (Henderson-10, De'Jionae Calloway-9, Shymkewicz-6, and Jordyn Jackson-6) scored for the Matadors in the first 20 minutes.
- Both teams got off to a sluggish start in the second half. The teams combined to shoot 3-of-10 (2-for-7 for Long Beach) over the first five minutes as CSUN led 33-22 at the media timeout. The Matadors got to the free-throw line and were able to push the advantage to 41-27 before Hayley Tanabe was whistled for a technical foul with a little under three to go in the period. Long Beach State closed on a 9-4 spurt to trail by nine to end the third.
- A pair of three-pointers from Justina King and Cyndee Kinslow drew the Beach to 49-44 with 8:01 to play in the fourth quarter. King's free throws a little over two minutes later cut the lead to six. On the ensuing possession, Deja Williams responded with a three-pointer. Williams made a steal and was fouled as the Beach inbounded the ball. She went to the free-throw line and made both for a 57-48 score.
- King scored the next three points of the game to put the game at 59-51 with 4:01 remaining. The score held at 59-51 over the next three minutes until a Williams' three-pointer from the right corner with 1:38 to go again made it an 11-point game. Shanajiah Davision responded with a basket off a Long Beach State fast break. The Beach went into a foul mode, sending Jackson to the line at the 58-second mark. She made both. Ma'Qhi Berry was fouled attempting a three-pointer and went to the free-throw line for three attempts.
- Berry was only 1-of-3 from the charity stripe. At 64-54, CSUN called timeout to advance the ball. Williams was fouled on the inbounds pass. She was 1-of-2 from the free-throw line. CSUN got a stop. Shymkewicz was fouled on the rebound and would make 1-of-2 from the line for the final score of 66-54.
- Henderson's previous career-high was 17 points which she recorded against Long Beach State on Feb. 21, 2019. She was 6-of-10 from the field, 3-of-5 from three-point range, and 3-of-4 from the free-throw line. She added five rebounds, four assists, two steals, and two blocks.
- De'Jionae Calloway recorded her 10th double-double of the year with 13 points and 12 rebounds. Jackson posted 12 while Williams added 11. King led Long Beach State with 14 points while Jasmine Hardy scored 13.
- The Matadors held the Beach (11-15, 6-7 Big West) to 33.9% shooting (19-of-56) and outrebounded Long Beach State 38-29. CSUN was 45.8% (22-of-48) from the floor.
ACCORDING TO HEAD COACH JASON FLOWERS
- "I thought we did some things well on the defensive end in the first half. Anytime you can hold a team to 17 points in the first-half that is good. Credit to our kids. I thought Meghann was big right from the beginning. She was aggressive and efficient. She made some plays on defense. Not only did she ignite us in the first half, but she hit a corner three when they made their run."
