Matadors Sweep Season-Opening Tri-Dual

The Matadors and Mustangs opened Saturday's tri-dual as CSUN picked up wins in all five matches while also claiming the No. 6 exhibition contest.
In the first flight of the day, Daniella Molinari and Lauren McMurray got CSUN on the board with a 21-9, 21-16 win over Kasie Spencer and Rebecca Swenningin the No. 4 pair. Darbi Honeycutt and Mikaela Maughan made it 2-0 CSUN with a 21-11, 21-14 victory over Emilye Grace Williams/CJ Catabona at No. 2. Abbey Sweeting and Tristin Sahlie paired up for the first time of the season in the exhibition No. 6 match and split two sets with Karli Stults and Rebecca Swenning (21-12, 16-21) before the match was called.
Aeryn Owens and Lexi McLeod opened the second flight with a dominating 21-9, 21-19 over Desi Elizondo and Katie Emmerling to nail down the team victory. The final two matches also went to the Matadors as Taylor Brydon and Kailey Klein swept Kylie Brown and Ketty Totemeier by the score of 21-19, 21-16 before Lauren Eknoian and Megan Carter were stretched the three sets at No. 5 against Chloe Johnson and Hannah Douglas before pulling out a 21-13, 14-21, 15-8 win.

After The Master's topped Cal State LA in the middle dual (3-2), CSUN improved to 6-0 all-time against the Golden Eagles winning by the count of 5-0.
The Matadors swept the first flight of matches as Honeycutt and Maughn opened the scoring with a 21-12, 21-14 over Jessica Kaeka and Julia Azevedo at No. 2. Molinari and McMurray picked up a 21-11, 21-17 win over Jeshmarie Suarez and Victoria Duarte at No. 4 before Sweeting and Sahlie completed a 21-18, 21-19 victory over Shelby Grubbs and Malia Apodaca in the No. 6 exhibition contest.
Needing just a single win to clinch the dual, Brydon and Klein made quick work of Janessa Mata/Ashley Apel, winning by the score of 21-8, 21-3. Owens and McLeod had a little trouble with Karla Santos and Alejandra Negron at No. 1 before taking a  21-16, 21-17 win. Carter and Eknoian then closed out the sweep with a 21-9, 21-8 over Shea McGovern and Haley Roundtree at No. 5.
COACH NOELLE ROOKE SAID
"We were tested a bit more than I anticipated in our first match. Give credit to The Master's, they have some good beach-only players in their program. So this was a bit of an awakening for our players and I was proud of how they responded to that. We have to work for every point in every match and I think we did that top to bottom today."

The Matadors return to the sand next Saturday as CSUN travels to Santa Cruz for the Big West/West Coast Challenge. The Matadors will take on Santa Clara, Saint Mary's and San Francisco on Mar. 7.
