CSUN-Arizona State Recap
CSUN put its five-match winning streak on the line against the eighth-ranked Sun Devils in the early game. A Matador ejection in the opening 90 seconds of the match led to a goal from Amira Van Buren. The Sun Devils added another from Eszter Kiss to lead 2-0 after the first quarter. The Matadors were held to one goal in the first 16 minutes of the match while Arizona State added four more in the second quarter to open up a 6-1 lead at the half. Borbala Kekesi led the way for Arizona State, scoring two of her four goals in the second period. Tori Wilson provided the only Matador offense in the half with a single goal.
McKenzie Beardsley opened up the scoring in the first minute of the third period to bring the Matadors within 6-2 but the Sun Devils added two more tallies in the quarter to push the lead to six. ASU kept the Matadors at bay in the fourth period as each team picked up a goal apiece over the last eight minutes. Andon-Mateos got into the scoring act on a five-meter penalty shot with 3:31 left to play but the Matadors would not get any closer.
In front of the cage, Meghan Lopez picked up seven saves along with a steal while Piper McCulloch came off the bench to register two saves and a steal. Kaitlyn Moguel also had two steals in the match.
"We didn't follow through on our game plan consistently enough to have a chance to win," said head coach Matt Warshaw. "On the offensive end, they threw some different looks at us and we need to be better at breaking the defense down and making open shots."
