In the second quarter, Katia Andon-Mateos and Alessia Marquez broke through with goals to give the Matadors a 3-2 lead. The lead though was short lived as Noelle Wijnbelt scored twice in a 41-second span to put the Aggies back up by one. As the final seconds ticked away in the first half, Sandhagen squared the match on a power play.
The seesaw match continued in the third quarter as Emily Byrne gave UC Davis a slim lead before Marquez tied the match once more with five minutes on the clock. Chloe Robinson though pushed the Aggies ahead once more at the 3:41 mark while CSUN could not take advantage of a power play chance seconds later. The Aggies would go in front by a 7-5 margin in the opening minute of the fourth but Sandhagen again trimmed the deficit to one on the next CSUN possession. Another key goal from the Wijnbelt made it a two-goal game with 4:14 to play before Madasonne Butler struck the back of the net a minute later. However, a key CSUN ejection led to another goal from Wijnbelt, stretching the deficit back to two. A late comeback was not in the cards as the Aggies held on for the 9-7 win.
Marquez had three assists and two steals while Andon-Mateos added two assists and a field block. Lopez picked up five saves in net.
"Davis played a physical game with a style we haven't seen a lot of, but we held our ground and fought until the end," said head coach Matt Warshaw. "Tied in the fourth, we missed some opportunities to take the lead and they capitalized on our mistakes."
